2020 Parade of Ornaments

Welcome! Welcome! The 11th annual "Parade of Ornaments" is about to begin! It's going to be a cold, snowy day here in western Pennsylvania--not exactly parade watching weather. But, oh--that's right, how could I forget? No big gatherings are permitted anyway due to Covid-19. So it's a good thing you're all snuggled safe and warm in your own homes... Grab a warm beverage (hot cocoa for me!) and sit back and relax as the parade is about to begin.

2020 was a difficult year for me to keep up with finishing my ornaments because I was away from home so much. In May and June, I was up in New York much of the time trying to nurse my mom back to health. And then, the months of July and October were spent in sunny San Diego delighting in my new baby grandson. I can't finish ornaments away from home--there are just too many bits and pieces involved. I finish my ornaments by audtioning various combinations of fabrics and cording and buttons and ric-rak and bells, etc. In other words, by the time I've decided on a finish, my house is turned upside down with boxes and drawers scattered here and there, various fabrics tossed on furniture, and buttons, bows, and ric-rak strewn everywhere. (Unlike many of you, I do not have a craft/sewing room).  This process happens each and every time I finish an ornament as I search for the "perfect little combination" that makes me smile, nod my head, and say: "That's it!" When that perfect combination happens, it's like a "Eureka" moment. Sometimes it comes right away, sometimes I let things sit for a while, sometimes I let things sit for days! Very rarely do I have a finish in mind when I begin stitching an ornament. How does your finishing process work?

This year, there is no theme to my 12 ornaments, although, as usual, most of them are Prairie Schooler designs. In fact this year half of them are! I needed a lot of "comfort stitching" this year due to my mother being so ill and her eventual death in July and I can always count on Prairie Schooler to offer me that solace. Here are all twelve lined up on my bannister--same old yellow hallway, same old red dining room in the background. Each year, I tell myself, "Next year your rooms will be painted a different color!" But, after 11 years of parades--I still haven't gotten around to painting my walls. Procrastination is my middle name, sometimes!

The 2020 "Parade Of Ornaments!"

My photos really aren't the best with these dark winter days. I'm hoping to upgrade my phone soon (in order to get a better camera) so, perhaps, by next year, my photos will look better. How about some close-ups for you? As always, I'd love to hear which one is your favorite of the 2020 collection. I'll be letting you know my personal favorite down below...

January ~ March 2020

April ~ June 2020

July ~ September 2020

October ~ December 2020

Hmmm... that's not much better, is it? How about close-ups of each ornament. If you would like more information on fabrics and threads that I used in each finish, just click on the name of the ornament below each photo and it will take you to the appropriate blog post. The information for December's ornament is in this post as I haven't shared that finish with you yet.

 JANUARY

Little House Needleworks "Firehouse"

FEBRUARY

Bent Creek "Red Bird Globe

MARCH

Prairie Schooler 1991 Annual Santa

APRIL
Prairie Schooler "Kris Kringle" Santa with dove

MAY
Prairie Schooler: "Santa's Night"

JUNE

With Thy Needle and Thread:  "Merry Mouse"

JULY

Prairie Schooler: "Angels" (Book No. 42)

AUGUST

Prairie Schooler: "Father Christmas" (Book No. 43)

SEPTEMBER

Prairie Schooler "Santa Moon" (Book No. 53)

 OCTOBER

Hands On Design "Cranberry Christmas"

NOVEMBER

Just Nan: "Blitzen Glistens"

 DECEMBER

Little House Needleworks: "Hot Cocoa" (details below)

Since I haven't shared my December ornament with you until today, I wanted to tell you a bit about it. The design is Part Five of the Little House Needleworks "Jack Frost's Tree Farm" series and is called "Hot Cocoa." As I mentioned above, hot cocoa is the only hot drink I enjoy! Aren't I strange? People always ask me, "Well, how do you get going in the morning without coffee or tea?" Sadly, it's sugar--the first thing I eat (and it's just one), is a chocolate covered almond from Trader Joe's. Naughty Carol... Oh well, I suppose it's no worse than putting a teaspoon of sugar in coffee or tea, right? And, at least, the almond is healthy! Anyway--back to my December finish. Here is a close-up for you as the photo above was taken on a dull December day and this shows the colors a bit better.

Are you a coffee, tea, or cocoa drinker?

Isn't it cute? I love that tiny snowman with his cardinal buddy resting nearby. For this finish, I used a random assortment of overdyed and DMC threads on some mystery 40 ct. gray linen (which wasn't my favorite). The final finish (shown above under "December"), includes two different fabrics separated by cream colored ric-rak, green cording, a green gingham bow ripped from a piece of fabric, and a little yo-yo made of the same fabric as the bow.

FAVORITES... So, which one do you like the most? It's a hard decision, but the little mouse, "Miss June," with her sweet apron just makes my heart smile. I truly love the With Thy Needle and Thread mouse designs and I know I'll be stitching more in the future.  But, my other favorite is the beautiful July Prairie Schooler angel that I stitched in memory of my mom who passed away on July 24th. Oh, how I miss her...

GIVEAWAY TIME... I found a charming old Leisure Arts chart that I removed from a magazine (unfortunately, I don't know which issue). The chart features ten red-cloaked Santas in various sizes and shapes. I just love that teeny-tiny one in the front right! I think this would be so cute stitched and displayed with a Santa collection, don't you? If you would like to enter the giveaway: 1) Specifically mention in your comments that you want to win the "Santa chart," 2) Make sure to leave your email address in your comment if I don't already have it, 3) Let me know which of my 2020 ornaments was your favorite and why. I will choose a name on Monday night, December 21st, and reveal the winner in my post next week. Good luck to all!

If you would like to win this chart, just follow the three steps listed above!

So, that wraps up another parade! I still can't believe I've been doing this since 2010... If you would like to look at the previous parades for inspiration, just click on the year and the link will take you right to the annual "Parade Of Ornaments" post for that year: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. Whew! That is a lot of ornaments stitched through the years. This year, there will be 167 on my tree! I try my best to make each one special and something that will be treasured as they are handed down to my children and grandchildren. I hope they know that each one was made with love...

Thank you for cheering me on this year during my latest "ornament-a-month" journey--I truly appreciate each and every comment, email, and kind word! Stitchers really are the best, aren't they? I hope you're all winding up your Christmas preparations (I still haven't finished my cards or even my tree, but I'm almost there). My goal is to have everything done by Sunday so I can just sit back and relax until Christmas day. It will certainly be a different Christmas for all this year, but we just have to make the best of it. We're planning on opening presents with our grandson via FaceTime--I hope he likes what I got him--ha ha!  Enjoy the countdown, my friends! Bye for now...

Santas Night and Cranberry Christmas are my favorite. Couldn’t decide on just one. LOVE all your beautiful stitches. Already looking forward to seeing your 2021 creations. Miriiam in Texas

I for one love that yellow wall and red dining room. They are classics and classics don't go out of style. So, you just keep stitching and sharing and don't worry you mind about the background. My favorite is always really hard to choose, but from the moment I saw Father Christmas with that basket of apples I couldn't get it out of mind. I rarely make quick purchases these days, but I mulled that over about a week and then went a hunting for the pattern. I found it on Ebay and not even a bad price. Hopefully, I can stitch him in '21 and personalize him for a Florida Santa. I do take a long time to figure out how I want to finish a piece. I can very much relate to your description of things being tossed about while you decide. That would have certainly been the scene before I got a room. I don't take it for granted not one bit. I also had continual messes when I was teaching and working on a special unit. It is just life.
Always enjoy the parade.

Well, you know I love the little mice! They're so cute (much more attractive than any that get caught in a vacuum ;( ). Overall, I just love all the little details in these pieces. I have to take time to look at each one--I always miss something (like the little cardinal friend below the Cocoa Stand). As for eating chocolate-covered almonds in the am...why not?! Beauteous ornaments, Care. Always admire your talent and the thought you put into your finishes.

Oh Carol...there’s no way to pick a favorite. Each one has its own special charm. Maybe the January firehouse since my son is a fire fighter. You are giving me inspiration to do the same.. not only an ornament a month but I also like how you added them to the garland on the bannister. I was just thinking mine railing decor was looking tired! Love the Santa’s pattern but not interested.....too many
patterns already! Happy holidays to you and yours. We too are doing Christmas via FaceTime 😟

Another beautiful ornament parade, Carol! Each one is lovely and you have a good mix. The non PS favorite is the Redbird in the Snowglobe. Was this a kit or a chart from Bent Creek? My favorite PS ornament is the PS Santa 1991. I drink all three -- coffee all year, tea at random times, and cocoa during random times in winter. Yum on the chocolate covered almonds. If they are dark, then would be even healthier.

My favorite is the angel you stitched for your dear Mom. It is just beautiful. I am amazed you can fit 12 more ornaments every year on your tree! And you have a big tree!! We will go to my Mom's house out on the driveway on Christmas Day. Even in the frigid cold. We will safely exchange gifts and that is about it. We will at least see each other. Oh how I miss kissing and hugging my family!!

Wonderful and beautiful parade! It's chilly in the desert this week so it was nice to attend the parade from inside my warm home with a hot cup of coffee.

I really did try to pick a favorite; seriously I did; I looked at each one and said "you're my favorite". In the end I couldn't do it so they're all my favorite.

I love them all everyone of them .
If you make me pick the last one is so sweet but like I said they are all
Lovely .
I always look forward to your posts .
I just found out Christmas is just a week Friday ! how did this happen I thought we had a few weeks yet .
Not wishing my life away but it will be so good to see the New Year in.

Well all of them are amazing but Blitzen Glistens is my favorite with Santa Moon as a runner up. And as a Prarie Schooler fan I was drooling over all of those! You inspire so many of us Carol! I’m a coffee drinker but tea is winning me over.

Stasi said...

Oh Caro, it's so hard to pick I favorite, but I am always drawn to the ones stitched on black. I have to break down and give that a whirl! I saw your post on IG and am going to consider doing an ornament every month in 2021. If I do, I will definitely be using your finishing ideas as inspiration.
I have never had a cup of coffee in my life but enjoy both cocoa and tea. I am raising a cup of cocoa in your honor as I type this.
Thanks for sharing your lovely work, it is always very motivational!

Dear Carol,
as always i'm happy to see a new Blogpost from you and when i saw all the ornaments, i couldn't be happier.
Yes, i want to win the beautiful Santa Chart, thank you for the opportunity.
My favorite 2020 Ornaments from you are the January ornament and the December Ornament. I love the sweet little details like the Cardinals, they are lovely and i really couldn't pick just one.
Your FaceTime present opening sounds like a good idea. I'm so glad, that we got such opportunities these days.
I didn't know what i would do without it. I just teached my 84 years old Grandpa how to use Whatsapp, so that we can send each other pictures of our everyday Life.

Have a beautiful Day

I had to scroll through them a dozen times to pick just one! I think the January "Firehouse" is my favorite. The brown is so warm and cozy. LOL
I would love to win the Santa chart, I always have a display of a multitude of Santa's and the chart would be a wonderful addition.

I’m new to this blogging thing. You have inspired me to stitch again. A friend taught me in my early 20’s and I did a few large pieces. Gifted my mom a Stoney Creek design which was a labor of love. She still has it hanging in her new home. My favorite of your ornaments is merry mouse. I love the snow flakes and the tiny details of the mama mouse. I would like to try to stitch the Santa’s if I win!

I’m so happy I found you and your crossstitch ornaments. My mom made 12count santas from Prairie Schooler every year for us for Christmas. I’m anxious to start follow your ornament stitching in 2021.
Do you send out your blog by email?
I know the feeling of missing your mom.
Take care.

Oh my, choices when all are so enticing to say the least. My goal because of you, one ornament a month, stitched AND finished! I am waffling, Merry Mouse and Firehouse. Loved Merry Mouse since I first saw the pattern, love that finish on Firehouse. Guess I'll go with Merry Mouse. Santa chart is darling. Thanks again for sharing with us!

Oh Carol, thank you for sharing your parade with us! I just love seeing all of them and each year going back to click on parades that have passed by on other years. I bought an oval tracing template so that I can try to do some of the Santa finishes like yours. I can't wait to receive the Kris Kringle leaflet that I've been waiting years for and is now re-released. I am late with my cards, too, this year and last week the post office was out of shipping materials, too! I guess that's what I get if I wait until the first week of December to mail things! Oh I love both coffee and tea as well as cocoa and as far as the chocolate almond goes, fabulous idea! I can't wait to hear all about your Zoom Christmas with your sweet grandson. He's the best news all year. Have a great time on your first Grandma's Christmas! xoxoClaire

This was so fun to look at. You have really done a lot of work! I think I will try sewing one a month like you. My favorite is one that reminds me of my mother. It is Prairie Schooler Father Christmas in blue. My mother’s favorite color was blue. She designed her home in colonial blue. Her home was so warm and inviting. In fact I have that book so I think I will do that one first for January! Thank you. I am going to take a closer look at your finishes too.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your walls, they look perfect to me :-) I had a red wall in the dining room of our previous house and i loved it!
It's so hard to pick a favourite ornament, they are all stitched and finished so beautifully. If I had to though, it would be the PS ones, love those.
I haven't written any cards either yet, but don't send many anymore so it won't take long. Like you I hope to have all the necessary things done by Sunday, we have two more Birthdays before Santa arrives :-)
Have a wonderful Christmas, it will be very different for sure. x

Merry Christmas Carol. Another inspirational post. Just love your finishes. Yes, I would love the multiple Santas chart. Have many santas stitched but never saw this one before. It is cute. I think my favorite month of your ornaments would be March. I am a Prairie Schooler lover and have many stitched and just waiting for finishes.

Carol,
This is my first year to see your ornaments and I am impressed! They are all beautiful and finished so nicely. My favorite ones are "Blitzen Glistens' and July "Angels". So hard to decide. I looked back through your past Parades and they are all wonderful! I love them displayed on the stairs. I am inspired for 2021....I will be happy to finish six...one every other month for my first year!
Merry Christmas...one of those bittersweet ones this year. There is nothing like a new grandbaby to cause a celebration. Mine are teens and we're still celebrating what blessings they are. Oh, I drink coffee.

Hi, Carol! My favorite ornament is October (Merry). I just love the way you finished it. But honestly, I love them all. It’s hard to pick just one.

Do you do your own painting? I used to, but these days we’d have to hire someone, and this is not the time you or I would want a bunch of strangers in our home working. We’ve put off painting and new floors because of Covid, and now with college right around the corner for Thomas, we may need to put projects off even longer.

Finishing is sometimes a four-letter word for me. I have to be in the right mood for it, and often I just think and think for weeks or months before tackling it. I try not to compare my finishes to others’. If I did, I would be too intimidated to ever finish anything. I took your advice about taking your time, and I’ve found that if I work slowly, carefully and thoughtfully, I like the result much more than if I just try to “get it done.” It makes all the difference between proudly displaying something versus wanting to hide it in a drawer because I’m not happy with it.

Good luck to the people entering the giveaway. I’d love to enter but I have so many things in my stitching queue that I don’t know when I’d get to it. Here’s to wrapping up the loose ends so you can enjoy the week before Christmas!

Merry Christmas Carol. This is my first time commenting but I've been receiving your monthly emails for a couple years, and I've saved each one for future reference. I started cross stitching in the mid-1970s and stitched until the late 1980s when I returned to work after taking a few years off after the birth of my two children.

I was so busy with a very demanding job in local government finance and eventually raising two children on my own that sadly I never had time to stitch again. Happily, I'm now 70 and retired, and after coming across your blog a couple years ago I was inspired to start stitching again. I've found it's more difficult now with older eyes and fingers numbed by carpal tunnel, but I'm enjoying it so much even though I'm very slow now. I just want to thank you for inspiring me to start stitching again. Karen Swan (formerly of Pennsylvania :) but now living in Michigan).

Oh my goodness! So many beautiful ornies! I just may have to follow your lead and stitch one a month in 2021! Difficult to pick a favorite... I do like the Merry Mouse... and of course the Hot Cocoa Stand... but the Blitzen Glistens catches my eye the most and makes me smile! I think it's the sparklies....I've been on a real glitter kick this season! :-) I'd be thrilled if I won the Santa Chart! Looks like a festive stitch.... the snowflakes look like they could be french knots.....though I'd probably use beads.....for sparkle! lol! Yes.... this would be a super enjoyable stitch! Thank you for offering! moosecraftusa at gmail.com And I'm a coffee drinker in the morning... a tea on the afternoon (only if necessary) and then hot chocolate in the evenings (when it's cold outside)! Gotta keep it interesting! ;-)

I'd love to win the Santa pattern. (rtrittel@gmail.com) I, like so many, collect Santa figures/cross stitch projects, so it would fit right in with my Christmas decor.

Merry Christmas to you and yours. My heart goes out to you at this time. Losing a parent is so difficult. Be at peace, friend.

Hi Carol - oh, what beautiful Christmas ornaments you have stitched (and finished!!). I know we all just love seeing your wonderful “Parade of Ornaments”. Each one is so special and with your amazing finishes, so unique and so personal. When I read that there will be 167 stitched ornaments on your tree, I was stunned! That is so wonderful. I know when I saw the box full of stitched ornaments in your last post, I thought how much fun it would be to sit with you and go though the box and enjoy looking at all of them. What a treasure! Your children and grandchildren will always love them.

It’s very hard to choose a favorite - I love them all, but I do have an extra soft spot in my heart for the March ornament, the PS 1991 annual Santa. I don’t think I have seen it before and it’s very special to me. I’m going to have to look back in your blog to see some of the earlier “Parade of Ornaments”. I always love to see your beautiful stitching and your very creative finishes.

I would love to enter your giveaway for the “Santa chart”. It really is so fun and perfect for the season. (I think you have my email address.)

I hope all is going well for you - did your part of PA get a lot of snow? We got a couple of inches, but not too big of a problem.

Barbara said...

Narrow down my favorite to just one?!!! I can't do that! Your stitching and finishing are always so beautiful and skillfully done. It's a delight to scroll through the pictures over and again. They are all, every single one, so special.

Please do not enter my name in the give-away since my life circumstances are making me to set cross stitch aside for a time. I'm having to focus on a myriad of other things, as I'm sure you understand. THANK YOU for your kind messages to me that help to ease the pain. You are very kind, Carol.

Blessed Christmas.

I am new to your blog and love what I see. It's so hard to pick a favorite but I would select the December ornament. Not only is the ornament beautiful but the way you put the final touches on them is what makes it gorgeous. I found your blog by looking for some sites to get me back into stitching. I haven't done it in years and would like to resume. It this is the place to get into the raffle for the Santas pattern, please put my name in. Thanks.

I love the Santa on September. Of course June is cute too but then they all are! I love coffee in the morning and now with the Keurig there are so many flavors to try; yummy. Occasionally nothing else will do except for hot chocolate but please hold the marshmallows! Are you going to San Diego for the holiday?

I would love to be entered for the Santa chart!

Happy birthday to your husband and may you both have a wonderful Christmas Carol!
ps...167 ornaments is a fantastic accomplishment!

I love your ornaments and I'm looking forward to your parade again this year, it's always so nice to look at. Like a book that one likes to pick up. Your ornaments are all so beautifully processed that I just have to memorize a few ideas.
Oh - I'm a coffee drinker, but in the cold season, I like to enjoy tea in the evening. And almonds are also allowed. You have to treat yourself to something.
Which one do I like best? It's difficult, I think it's the November and December motifs. I like this reindeer with the little cardinals, and I also associate the cocoa stand with a visit to a Christmas market.
Yes, I would like to win the table, the Santas look great, and it's something completely different.
Take good care of yourself and your family and have a nice 4th Advent.

I don't have a craft room so I have to use the dining table. I'm not sure how many miles I cover going up and down stairs. Sometimes I know exactly how I'm going to finish something, others are still languishing in THE pile until that bit of inspiration comes to me.
I usually have a coffee as a first drink of the day (and it's usually about an hour after I've eaten breakfast) and then tea for the rest of the day. It works out to about 3 mugs a day and then I'll be drinking water throughout the day.
Take care, have a good weekend.

Such a fantastic display! They are all gorgeous in their own different ways, but I think my favourites are June and October

I love June, July and October. I have seen the July angel on another blog and I loved it then. Miss Mouse is charming. Hard to defuse. I applaud your perseverance and love the way you display the ornaments. This has been a hard year for us all, but you have had unique sadness and joys. I enjoy following along with your stitching projects. Merry Christmas from central Texas and a blessed 2021 for us all!

What an amazing collection! My favorite ornament is the one from October. I love the simplicity, the symmetry, and the fact that you said it looks so "bright!" Merry and bright - perfect for Christmas. I would love to win the giveaway. I hand painted a group of Santas that represent the Santa figure through the years in different countries, and it would be fun to display them in front of this beautiful sampler of Santas. My email address is msmtjones4@aol.com. Thank you.

Have a wonderful holiday!

I’ve just discovered your blog and absolutely love looking at your beautiful stitching! I would love the Santa pattern. My favorite ornament is June-Merry Mouse. I’ve stitched the mouse in the sewing room for my friend who found “evidence of mice” in a fabric box in her sewing room. How appropriate. 😊

What a wonderful choice of superb stitching. My favourites are:
Prairie Schooler 1991 Annual Santa (March) and Merry, Cranberry Christmas(October)! Both absolutely gorgeous!
May you and your husband have a wonderful Christmas, Carol!

A gorgeous ornament parade as always Carol! I am so impressed with all your “over one” stitching and if I had to pick a favorite, it would be a tie between January and October - just love them both, but the others aren’t far behind! My finishing process is more like - ooh, I finished stitching it, let’s put it away in a drawer for years since I don’t know how I want to finish it, and then at some point, I get a little kick in the pants and finish 3 or 4 at a time. I have actually done really well this year setting some time aside for FFO’ing and now have more done than waiting, with a few more in progress as of yesterday. Hope you enjoy the quiet of this holiday with fond memories of your mom (and dad), and joy with your grandson over FaceTime.

I love your yearly ornament parades, Carol! It's always such a highlight at Christmas time. I think my favourite this year would be October, closely followed by June and February, but of course they all look great.
You certainly had an eventful 2020, even more so than most of us - I hope the holidays, strange as they may be this year, will bring you some time to relax, unwind, and center yourself.

I, for one, will never grow tired of seeing your tree and your ornaments! You've created such treasures that I know will be passed down to future generations! Someday, some will say, my great-great grandmother stitched this! My favorite this year is September's Santa Moon. I love crescent Santa's and love how you created this ornament with double circles! Second favorite is October's Cranberry Christmas. Just love this one; simple yet beautiful! I'll be looking forward to your new ornaments in 2021!

Another gorgeous parade of ornaments. Love them all but the November deer one is probably my favorite. I look forward to cheering you along next year.

I've been saving this post until I had time to sit and read it properly! I love your ornaments garland and actually made my own this year.
I really like the little Mouse from With Thy Needle but I am also a fan of the black fabric you used on quite a few. I think that's my resolution for this year - stitch more on black! It looks so effective for Christmas designs.
