A rollercoaster of a month...

Good day, all! It's a gloomy, chilly Friday here in southwestern Pennsylvania so I thought I'd finally sit down and write a new post. It's been over three weeks since I last checked in--have you missed me? I haven't been in much of a blogging mood--or even a stitching mood--lately. I just can't seem to settle and focus for some reason. Is it because it's spring? Who knows... Anyway, I hope you've all had a good month and are looking forward to May's arrival on Monday.

I did manage to stitch and finish one sweet Spring piece this month. I seem to be on a bird kick lately and am finding myself more and more drawn to charts that feature our feathered friends. This charming little design is by Homestitchness on Etsy. Unfortunately, Jenny's shop seems to be on a break right now, but you can sign up to be notified when it returns by clicking here.  "Springtime Greetings" is such a perfect design for the season, don't you think?  I mean what says spring more than the arrival of robins and daffodils? I stitched it on 40 ct. platinum Newcastle linen using all of the suggested threads (except for one of the colors in the urn which I changed from DMC 3776 to DMC 976).

"Spring Greetings" by Homestitchness on Etsy

I found a frame in my stash (99 cents from Goodwill!) that fit perfectly. This is such an easy finish... Simply cover a piece of sticky board with fabric for the background. Gather your stitched piece into a round shape (I just use a glass or a bowl to trace a round shape onto the backing board to get the desired size) using this tutorial. Then, glue the round ornament on to the fabric-covered piece of sticky board, add cording around the perimeter (I use Aleene's Tacky Glue applied lightly with a toothpick), and top with a pretty bow to hide where the ends of the cording meet. Doesn't it look darling on the bookshelf in my family room?

A bright pop of yellow on my bookshelf!

My ornament for April is from the Prairie Schooler booklet called "Old World Santas" (book no. 80).  I've stitched three of the Santas from that booklet so far and am finishing them all the same way. They're stitched on 40 ct. raw natural Newcastle linen with DMC threads. I did change a few of the colors and am using what I consider the classic Prairie Schooler Santa color, DMC 221, for the robe. The green I'm using for these is DMC 501. I left off the bottom border as I wanted an oval finish and added Smyrna stitched snowflakes in the background. Love the final effect. A lot of folks think that the fabric is printed that way--nope! It's all stitched... It takes a while, but is totally worth it in the end!

April 2023 ornament finish

And here are the three Santas I've finished so far... I think my favorite is the one on the right with the walking stick and the bird. How about you?

Three down, five to go!

I do have a problem, though--I am almost out of the ribbon I've been using to finish these ornaments and I still have five left to stitch! Does anyone have this particular ribbon on hand? I don't need much--maybe a couple of feet. I believe it was sold at Michael's (here in the United States) last year or the year before. Please let me know if you have any to spare--I'd be happy to pay you for it! Here is a close-up:

Does anyone have to have any extra ribbon like this?

Pouch fever! I seem to be finding myself more and more drawn to making simple zipper pouches. This month I made two of them using the tutorial from Erica Arndt on YouTube which you can find right here. Now, I am not a confident sewer (or sewist, if you prefer--there is an interesting discussion in this Threads Magazine article on whether to call yourself a "sewer" or "sewist"), but I find this to be a very straightforward tutorial. I love the added zipper tabs--not only do they look cute with the contrasting fabric, but they finish off the top so nicely. The final size of these pouches is approximately 4" high by 9" long. Next, I'd like to try sewing a larger one with boxed corners to help it stand up easily. Wish me luck!

Making these little pouches is rather addicting!

I bet you can't guess who that yellow pouch is for, can you?! Oh, my oldest son absolutely loved Curious George when he was young and his own son does, too. I was so excited to find a little vintage scrap of Curious George fabric on Ebay and thought it would make a perfect pouch for my grandson to hide his little treasures in. The interior and the zipper tabs are made from a dotted brown cotton from my stash.

I hope "Mister B" likes his new treasure pouch.

And I knew this blue and white fabric would be perfect for a new pouch in which to keep my stitching necessities. The fabric was a gift from a fellow stitcher (many years ago) and I absolutely love the scissors and strawberries that are featured on it. For the interior and the zipper tabs, I used one of my husband's old dress shirts (I have plenty of them to cut up and use now that he's retired!).

Those old dress shirts of my husband's sure come in handy for the linings and backs of projects!

So what do I consider my necessities for my stitching pouch? Well, I am a real minimalist when it comes to my stitching. I don't use hoops or frames to hold my stitching and I don't use needleminders. So... this is it: needles, a pen (thanks Vickie!), scissors (thanks, April!), a seam ripper, and a corner measuring ruler (thanks, Robin!). How about you? Do you stitch with lots of extras or are you more of a minimalist like me?

I just love my new stitching pouch!

Giveaway winner... I was pleased to see so many entries for the "John 3:16 Sampler" that I offered in my last post. I think this is one of those pieces that will be much prettier stitched up than it appears in the photo, don't you? The winner's name pulled from the hat is...

JustPam

JustPam--you are the winner of this pretty chart!

Congratulations JustPam, please send me your mailing address (my email is in the right sidebar--just click on "A Bit About Me" and you will find it). I'll get this chart out to you next week--hope you enjoy stitching it! And for those of you who didn't win... keep an eye on this space for future giveaways!

So, about the title of today's post... Yes, April has been a month of ups and downs. Nothing unbearably sad, thank goodness. Just the normal twists and turns of life. Let's start with the downs:

* My husband now has tennis elbow in his "good" arm (the one that didn't have the shoulder replacement surgery). He overused it and is suffering for it. Does anyone have any experience with helping "tennis elbow" heal faster?

* My son and his girlfriend who were both here for Easter, came down with Covid two days later. They have no idea where they got it as they hadn't even been at any gatherings. They had gone to the grocery store and a thrift store, but that's it! Both are recovering, but it was a rough go for a while. Fortunately, neither my husband nor I came down with it. I am now the last member of my immediate family not to have contracted Covid. I'm sure I will at some point, but I hope not...

* I just came back from the dentist yesterday--need a new crown. Honestly, it's always something with my poor teeth. I try and try to take good care of them, but...

* I haven't seen my little grandson in over two months now. What can I say :( We didn't dare have him around my husband after his shoulder replacement surgery as he is so active. Boy, do we miss that little fellow!

* The weather... So many ups and downs, but it's been an awfully cold and gloomy second half of April. We've had frosts on several nights, but have managed to cover our plants and vegetables up so they are safe (for now!).

On the flip side, there were some nice moments happening in April as well...

* I've been enjoying the most beautiful cut flowers from my husband's garden. He planted tulip and daffodil bulbs last fall and these are the stunning results.

Love the peachy/rosy color of the tulips!

Blue, yellow, and white--one of my favorite color trios!

* My oldest son, daughter-in-law, and grandson have bought a house! They were thrilled to find one in the Potomac, Maryland neighborhood (where they are currently renting) and will move in September. I'm having a lot of fun looking for decorating/remodeling ideas for them.

* We have a little visitor each morning peering into my husband's den window. Such a cutie--he's not doing any harm, just seems very interested in what may be going on inside!

"Well, hello there, Mr. Robin!"

* We have high hopes that we'll see our grandson in mid-May for Mother's Day! Hopefully, my husband's shoulder and elbow will both be feeling better by then. Right now, "Mister B" is enjoying a long weekend in Naples, Florida with his mom and dad. Looks like he's really having a wonderful time capturing who-knows-what in that net!

Mister B in Naples, Florida. I wonder what he's caught in his little net!

So, April comes to an end... I love the month of May and the warmer weather that (usually) accompanies it. I want to welcome my new followers and thank my regulars for your sweet comments and emails. I can't always respond to each of you, but I hope you know how much I appreciate you taking the time to say "hello!" Enjoy your weekend everyone and I'll see you again in the merry, merry month of May! Bye for now...

Spring Greetings is adorable Carol! I love the robins. They are our state birds. :)
Your Santas are lovely!
I hope and pray you never get COVID Carol. I know many do not get complications, but plenty do get permanent complications like me, as you know. I would never want that for you.
I am so happy your son and DIL bought a home! :)

I am not a fan of yellow but just gotta say that piece is stunning! Thanks for telling us how you did it. The Santa’s are going to be so wonderful come Christmas time. Did you find the ribbon?

I can't get over how grown up Mr. B is looking! Time surely does fly by!

I'm glad your husband is doing better and I hope his tennis elbow resolves quickly. I'm sure you're ready to put your nurse hat away! :)

Sorry I have nothing to offer about the elbow. And I can't help regarding the ribbon!

Oh my. Mr. B is growing up too quickly! He will have lots of fun in his new house. Congrats to the family.

Five days of rain started today. At least it's not snow! Beautiful color on those huge tulips.

Just love Spring Greetings, Carol...really sings with the season. Your workmanship in finishing is so neat and creative. Hope Hubby knits together
in short order... either a elbow or shoulder problem has to be limiting, but
both .... not needed by a dedicated gardener.

Another great post , love your new stitch and finish looks wonderful I must try this finish .
Oh yes I know how you feel , our weather is all over the place one day you can sit in the sun another you need some kind of heating on.

The only way I got my elbow better was a sling and time ,plus pain killers.
It's not a easy mend ,I still have to be carful.
May, will make us all feel much better.
Have a lovely weekend ,Hugs June.

Good morning Carol!
I always enjoy your blogs. April has been full of ups and downs! Weather here in GA has been so very odd!
I love the little pouches and may have to try one myself!
Best wishes for your husbands speedy recovery and hope that elbow is back to normal soon!
I’m gonna be a grandmom in September! My first! Looking forward to my grandsons arrival and what fun we will have!
Lots on chore list today, so need to get started. Happy May to you!

Carol, both of your finishes are lovely. While I love your PS Santa ornament finish, my favorite is your round Robin with daffodil finish. So bright and cheerful! In my stitching pouch, I have several packages of needles (26s/28s), a corner measure, scissors and a tape measure. I love needle minders, but typically dress up my refrigerator with them although I do have one in my to go stitching pouch and one on the side table by my stitching chair that holds my current needle. Have a wonderful weekend!

Your embroidery is very pretty, Carol.

Happy Spring Carol: Your Santa finishing is as always beautiful, I will be going to Michaels Joann's and Hobby Lobby on Wednesday for stash enhancement, I will keep my eyes open when in the ribbon dept.
The robin and daffodils design is beautiful and a perfect finish, thank-you for the links for both of the finishing techniques..
Your grandson is adorable, I hope you are able to see him and mom and dad soon.
I hope your husbands healing is quick and he is back to a normal day.
Your husbands flowers are beautiful, you have picked the perfect vases to put them in.
The bags are adorable the Curious George is a hoot, I use hoops and bars only on large projects, all the smaller designs I hold in hand.

Have a wonderful week

You are always missed Carol! I often check my blog roll to see if you've posted. Mr B is losing his baby-ness! I hope he and his parents will be able to visit you and the hubby on Mother's Day, fingers crossed. Tennis elbow, I found resting it, (which meant I had to stop stitching for a bit) and ice helped. Thanks for the links for finishing ideas. I have an oval finish that I want to frame and wasn't sure how go about that.

Here's to less downs and more ups for you and your family! Hope the weekend is going well!

A really cute motif with the daffodils and the robins, and perfect finish.
I also really like your April Santa.
Your two bags are very successful, so you can use them for many things, they are really practical.
I'm more like you, I don't have much what I need for stitching, needle, scissors, dividers, pen and blocks, that's enough for me.
I also had tennis elbow, and then got a bandage for the wrist, which relieves the muscles, otherwise just take it easy, and maybe an ointment against inflammation. coolness has also helped me.
Your April was really varied, but good that there was no bad news.
Now enjoy the first days of May and let's hope that things will improve then.
Hugs, Martina

Birds and flowers, especially combined, make beautiful stitching pictures. Yours is beautiful framed in sunny yellow! It's so lovely to see the spring flowers again.

Your grandson is growing up and enjoying the beach as he concentrates on his activity!

Yes, life has its ups and downs for all of us. We need to be patient during the more challenging moments and be thankful when the good moments return.

Wishing you a wonderful start to the month of May.

Your finish is so very pretty.
The Santas all look nice, I like the one with the lantern.
Sorry, don't have that ribbon, maybe someone can help.
Your pouches are so nice, great job.
I'm sure Mr. B will love his. :)
Thanks for all of the links.
April was very cold here,it still gets down to 28 degrees some nights. :(
And sometimes we still have flurries. :(
I hope your husband's aches & pains go away soon.
Mr. B is getting so big!

Mister B a bien grandi !
Amitiés de France,
Christel

Firstly, that is a beautiful Spring finished. I finished one of Jenny's design nearly similar to yours, the Dafodills which was featured at Cross Stitcher(U.K).
Love your PS ornaments..hope someone can help you with the ribbon.
Great job on the pouch! Like you i am a minimalist as i don't use hoops, frames or needleminder.
Sending good wishes for your husband recovery..and mister B is growing up so quick.
Gorgeous flowers from your garden.
Happy week!

Hi Carol, Here in Michigan we've had recent gloomy, chilly days as well. The framed spring cross stitch project is nice and cheery. The red-check ribbon is darling. Hope someone has a bit in their stash to share and/or you'll find some online. Honestly, the fact that you do not stitch with a hoop was a total surprise as your work is neat, tidy and fine. Certainly, you rarely have need for a seam ripper. That notion is my best friend, unfortunately. May your husband recover from his injuries and may you see Mr. B soon!

What a fun idea to repurpose your husband's shirt fabrics into the little pouch! I hope to do some closet surfing in the near future.

The Santas are always so adorable and classic. I am enjoying our spring. It is still cooler in the mornings so my flowers are all very happy. When the heat arrives, they won't be so chipper. I know the feeling about the teeth. I try so hard to take care of mine too. I have a crack we are watching. Yuck! I have no experience with tennis elbow, but it sounds like no fun. I too am the one who hasn't had Covid either or if I did I didn't know it. Happy to hear the kiddos have bought a house. That means they are settling in and not thinking about moving back to the west coast. Much quicker to get to them where they are which is huge in my book. That little boy is growing up as fast as mine are.

Always a treat to visit with you! I look forward to your every blog entry and love seeing what you’ve been up to. You finish things so beautifully. I love the yellow fabric you mounted this piece on. The tutorial you cited is interesting and is one you’ve had for some time it looks like. She is very thorough and I’ve put it in my Reading List for further reference. I too received the ‘crown’ diagnosis from my dentist last visit. I do not inherit my dad’s strong teeth! I dread the cost and the unpleasantness of that procedure. I have not signed up for it yet!!!! Your little zip bags are precious. I sew with only a few things……needle, floss, scissors, a pencil to color in the pattern I’m stitching and my IPad so I can watch some flosstubers while I stitch! I do have a hoop I will use on one of the WIPs that I’m currently stitching on Sundays. It is attached to a piece I sit on so that my hands are free to stitch. It was a Christmas gift I had asked for a year or two ago. But I really stitch in hand mostly. May here in central Texas means the approach of summer. We’ve had an unusually cool April and I’ll welcome any little fronts that bring us cooler air in May, though it often means violent weather. The highways are bordered with gorgeous yellow wildflowers right now….coreopsis, yellow daisies and the gallardia are appearing to trim the edges with orangey beauty. I hope May brings you the desired good weather. Till next time!

Springtime Greeting is so lovely, love the way you finished it, and the PS Santa is great too, I think the oval finish is my favourite.
Sorry your hubby has tennis elbow to add to his discomfort, I know how painful it can be as I had it a few years ago. I used a strap I got from Amazon and it seemed to help with the pain, together with the exercises. Not sure there is a quick fix but fingers crossed he will start to get some relief soon.
Clever you making zippered pouches, I have only attempted a zip once and made a right mess of it, lol.

That’s a lovely cheery Spring design. Robins are traditionally a Winter or Christmas bird for us, although we have them all year round in our garden. There’s a lovely traditional tale about how they got their red breast too, I’m don’t know if you’ve heard it?

Hope the health issues abate so you can see your Grandson soon, he does look like he’s having fun by the seaside!

Great new stitch Carol on the Spring Greetings piece! I love the framing and backing material you used also, looks like everything goes perfectly together. Thanks for the how-to also. All the Santa ornaments look great and I am over here cheering you on in the stitching of the next five! I rarely go on YouTube unless someone recommends a link sooo I went to your link and I like those little pouches. They would be very handy for stitching accessories to take on the go. Good luck with the ribbon, maybe there is some on eBay?

Glad you haven't caught the COVID bug! Do you still wear a mask when you are out and about? I do, I don't know if it helps but I figure it doesn't hurt. THANKFULLY nobody on our home has come in contact with that bug. It still seems very relevant here in the States.

I don't know what Mr. B has caught be he seems to be having a great time. Hope your DH's shoulder is well enough for Mr. B to visit for Mother's Day.

ps... I hope you have a very Happy Mother's Day

Maybe you can do four Santa's with that ribbon and the other four with a similar one?

Spring is definitely beautiful at your house with flowers from the garden, robins in the window and your new stitched piece! Robins are such sweet and beautiful birds. Sometimes my yard is full of them.

Another beautiful Christmas ornament done! I love how you added the Smyrna Cross snowflakes. I need to remember that. I'm a hiker, so Santa with the walking stitch is my favorite.

Your pouches are adorable! Your grandson will love his I'm sure. I am a sewist, but I've never sewn a pouch. Maybe I'll try that. I'm pretty minimal with stitching supllies, but I do have a needle minder. I use a magnetic board to hold my chart and keep the minder there. If I don't, my needle will wind up on the floor!

I hope you do get to visit your grandson this month. I'm sure he is missing you as much as you miss him.

Have a lovely May!

Wow, what a month you've had! Your stitching is lovely, I just adore the soft spring colours on 'Spring Greetings' and I really need to try out that type of framing some time!
These pouches look very useful. I'm a little more gadget-y in my stitching - I do use hoops and needle minders, but have never used a seam ripper in stitching.
Hope May will be a good month for you (or is a good month already...still so behind with my blog reading!) and will only bring good news for your health and that of your family.

I am finally doing some blog reading this morning and glad to see your post in my feed - I always enjoy seeing more details about your stitching and hearing what is going on in your life. Hope that May has been good for you, you've been able to see your grandson, and your husbands shoulder and elbow are doing better. My mom used to always say that things would calm down when we graduated and moved out, but that doesn't seem to be the case, does it? Love your venture into sewing - I have a ton of small bag patterns and would be happy to send a few your way so you could try them out - I love to make small bags! Lazy Girl Designs patterns are one of my favorites. Hope May has been warmer for you and with more ups than downs!
