A month of ups and downs

Good morning, everyone! How has your February been? For a short month a lot has taken place here--some happy things and some sad. Throughout everything, though, my stitching is one of the few things that keeps me grounded and brings me peace. I know all of my fellow stitchers can relate!

I have just one finish to share with you today, but, boy did it take longer to stitch than I expected. To be honest, I actually started this one in mid-December thinking I would finish it before the end of the year. Ha! I never even came close... Part of the problem was simply a lack of stitching time during the busy Christmas season. And part of why it took so long was figuring out the colors. Because I made some changes--a lot of them! Anyway, it's finally done and I love it! May I present, "Hometown Christmas," by Abby Rose Designs.

"Hometown Christmas" by Abby Rose Designs

Doesn't this remind you of a Prairie Schooler Design? I've always enjoyed stitching houses and these especially appealed to me because of the small town feeling this piece evokes. Having grown up in a tiny western New York village (with just one traffic light at the time--today there are two!), small town life has always been very special to me. I stitched this on a piece of 40 ct. Pearled Barley (by Lakeside Linens) that had been in my stash for years and I was so glad to finally find a use for it.

I changed the house on the left from red to green.

A number of changes were made to the colors in this piece, but the main one was was to the house in the front left (The Needle Shop). It was charted to be another red house, but I thought the green would make for a more interesting color palette so I used DMC 730 and 731. I also changed the colors of the green border and the pine trees to WDW Moss and WDW Bullfrog, respectively. Another big change came after I had the entire chart stitched and that was to change the name on one of the buildings. Do you see the red structure? Well, that originally said "Town Hall," but the more I thought about it, it just didn't have any meaning for me. The other two buildings certainly did (candy and stitching--yes, indeed!), but I wanted to personalize this little town with my interests. I really wanted to make the red building say "Library," but to make it fit the space, I would have had to make the letters tiny, so I chose to use "Books" instead. Of course, I decided this after I had already stitched the words "Town Hall!" I thought about leaving them, but... I knew that each time I looked at it, I'd be wishing that building had something to do with books. After all, I was a librarian for nearly 30 years! So, I patiently ripped out the tiny stitches in the top of the building and restitched it after charting the word "Books." Love how it turned out!

Every town needs a bookstore, so I changed what was supposed to be a Town Hall to a big red bookstore.

In an effort to put winter behind me, I'm now working on a spring piece... In fact, it's the sweet bunny delivering flowers chart ("Spring Delivery" by With Thy Needle and Thread) which I offered in my giveaway in my February 13th post. I'm not quite done with it so I haven't drawn a winner's name yet. Anyway, there is still time to enter if you want to. Just head back to my previous post, read the guidelines, and comment to be entered into the drawing for "Spring Delivery." Next time I'll have the winner's name for you--I promise! And I'll have my own finish of this charming design to share with you!

Life is a circle of happiness, sadness, hard times, and good times. If your are going through hard times, have faith that good times are on the way." The human experience is

As I mentioned earlier, February has been a very up and down month here. In the space of just one week, we lost two very special people. A dear woman (whom I considered my aunt) passed at the age of 93 after battling dementia for a number of years. She was one of my mother's dearest friends and her family used to vacation with mine in Canada each summer when I was growing up. So many memories came flooding back when I learned of her death. I am truly relieved she is finally at peace and I will always remember her beautiful smile and giving spirit.

And exactly one week later, my husband got a call that one of his best biking friends had suddenly passed while in a rehabilitation facility. I think we are both still in shock as this wasn't the outcome that anyone expected. He had been in a terrible bike accident back in late August and had been hospitalized, undergone a 14-hour surgery, and seemed to be recovering. But, I guess in the long run, the effort of coming back from a broken neck and a back broken in several places, was just too much. He was only 72 years old--a year older than us. This makes the third person we've known to die from biking accidents over the past 15 years or so. To say that I worry about my husband is an understatement. He bikes three days a week in good weather--it is his passion just like stitching is mine. So, what do I do? I can't stop him from cycling, so I simply tell him to "ride carefully" and say a little prayer each time he heads out for another ride.  You just never know when it's your time, do you?

On the happy side, I'm pleased to report that my husband's shoulder replacement recovery is going very well. His range of motion improves each week and, although the physical therapy leaves him in pain for a day or two, he sticks with it and is very conscientious about going to each session. He hopes to be recovered enough to resume his biking season in late May or early June assuming he stays on this same path of recovery.

Another joyful day was spent celebrating my niece's soon-to-arrive baby girl with a lovely shower in Indiana this past weekend. It was a long drive (6 hours) out there in rather dicey weather (terrible winds going out/snow and icy roads on the way home), but she was so thrilled to have us there and we wouldn't have missed it for the world. Is there anything better than a new baby to help ease your worries? I can't wait to meet the newest member of our family in April!

So, what do you have planned for March? I don't think I'll be doing any St. Patrick's Day stitching this year and plan to jump to one of my favorite themes--bunny stitching for Spring and Easter. My grandsons (and their parents, of course) are going to be visiting at the end of March--I can't wait! I miss them so much... Hopefully, the worst of winter is behind us. We escaped that massive storm that hit the East Coast over the weekend and the sun is supposed to shine brightly today after this fog dissipates. In a bit, I'm heading to the dentist for a crown in one of my molars--oh, joy! Not my favorite activity, but I'll reward myself for being brave with an afternoon of stitching. Hope you enjoy your day, my friends--thank you, as always for visiting and for your kind words! Bye for now...

“Hometown Christmas” is beautiful. Your color choices are excellent. I can imagine it looking any other way!

I am so sorry for the losses of your “aunt” and your hubby’s biking buddy. Both are hard to take.

I had shoulder replacement surgery 17 years ago. I’m so glad your hubby is recovering well from that!

Stitching the bunny-themes does sound cheery as you work your way through a very snowy winter!

This is such a sweet piece Carol. I love the changes you made. I hope your dental work goes smooth. I have had that done. Ugh. I know winter is not done for us up here! I look forward to seeing your bunnies.

I love your finish of Hometown Christmas, Carol. It turned out beautifully and it definitely reminds me of a mini PS village design. I am sorry to hear about the losses during February. I look forward to seeing what bunnies make an appearance via your needle and thread. Thinking of you!

That embroidery is truly beautiful, Carol.
.I'm sorry to hear the sad news, but that's life; it brings joys and sorrows, so we must cherish every good moment we can.

Your changes are perfect and that sure is a lot of stitching. At first glance it does look like a Schooler.
So sorry for the losses you two have had. But glad the shoulder is recovering. My friend had reverse replacement and never got strength back after over a year of therapy. Excellent Pittsburgh surgeon, just too much damage to begin with.
Enjoy the weather break! Won't last long. Time for a pot luck banana cake with coffee icing!

Carol, I understand the loss of friend and family. I too lost a very good friend this week and I guess that's part of the age we are...losing friends/family as we get older. On another note, I am happy to report that I have been busy and have finished my second Christmas ornament, Feb done and 2nd ornament done. :) Last year I only completed six and this year have resolved to finish 12 by Christmas. The weather outside today is beautiful and yet I remained in the house determined to finish my stitching! I have six grandchildren and want to make each an ornament, so that's what I'll try to do first before I work on any other stitching. Hope your dental work goes well and you recover easily. Hi Carol, your Abby Rose stitch is so cute. I don’t usually change colors, but your green house is perfect. I love that you personalized it with a book store! I’ve stitched a number of her designs and it’s a shame they aren’t readily available anymore. I’ve stitched “Spring Delivery” and it’s such a pretty stitch. But, I love everything from With Thy Needle and Thread!
I’m sorry for the losses you’ve had this month. Such a sad and tragic accident for your husband’s friend. I can understand your worry. It’s good that the shoulder recovery is coming along and I’m sure you’re glad to have today’s dental work behind you!
Hopefully, we’re on the downside of winter! I’m thinking spring! Cherie in WI

Carol, I especially like the border around the little town….and what a great little town it is!!!!! Books, Stitching and Candy!!!!!! I’d love to live there! It is hard to lose people from your life. I’m in my late 80s and it is happening way too often. But we believe those we love go on to a wonderful place and I love remembering them in my prayers each night. I so enjoy your blog. Hello Carol,
your newest finish looks great. I like your changes.
Es freut mich zu hören, dass dein Mann gute Fortschritte nach seiner Schulter OP macht.
Today we have sunny weather. I hope that the winter is gone.
Have a nice weekend. Manuela

Your newest finish is perfect for you. I do like the color change to a green house. Books, stitching and chocolate sound truly delightful. I suppose I would have to add a schoolhouse.
It is hard watching many die around our age. I am feeling it too. I lost a good teacher friend a few years ago. That was tough. I keep a pic by my desk of her. Jeff has a work friend but more too. They went to high school together and they retired together. Steve had a car accident and decided to go out with Jeff and then found out he had cancer. He is been fighting it bravely but found out this week he probably won't live through the summer. Just so dang hard
Enjoy those little ones as much as you can. I count that as my blessing that keeps me going.

Always thrilled when I see your blog has arrived. Six years ago, I had a stroke, but I am again able to cross stitch (although very slowly). It brings me great joy and I cannot stop purchasing all kinds of wonderful charts that I see! Much happiness to you.

Hi Carol -
Oh, I just love your “Hometown Christmas” and all the changes you have made to make it so personal for you! It really is so beautiful and so charming (and, obviously, quite a lot of work for you!). I’m not familiar with Abby Rose Designs, so I’ll have to see what other beautiful designs are available. It’s always so much fun to see how many creative designers are out there.

It is especially great to know that Tim’s shoulder is healing up really well. I can truly appreciate replacement shoulder recovery. And, It is so nice to know that your grandsons and their mom and dad will be visiting you soon. So much fun and love to look forward to in just a few weeks.

Enjoy all your fun stitching and thanks for showing us what beautiful work you have been doing. Always so fun and wonderful to see,

xoxo Barb R.🌺

Hometown Christmas is another lovely pattern. And I really like the changes; they suit you perfectly.
Oh dear, losing loved ones is never easy. And you're always worried, whether it's about your own children leaving home or your spouse, and you're always grateful when everyone comes home safe and sound. You can't lock anyone up, but you can trust that everything will be alright and that the guardian angels are doing their job and watching over you.
It's really sunny here with lovely temperatures, so I can even go out into the garden. Otherwise, I'm enjoying my time with my stitching and knitting.
Have a wonderful March, Martina

Hope your dentist appointment went okay - I've just come home too and am now waiting to feel my face again so I can have dinner!
I'm so sorry for the losses you've had this past month. Whether is comes as a surprise or after long preparation, it still hits hard to lose a person you love.
Hopefully, your stitching can be a bit of a consolation in these times, and how beautiful it is! I wholeheartedly agree, a library is way more important to have than a town hall!

What a beautiful finish Carol. Your stitching is as lovely as ever.
It has been an age since I visited here and I don’t care much for Instagram any more these days so I don’t see what you post there.
All I seem to see in my feed are reels and adverts.
I’m sorry for the loss of your aunt and family friend. Getting older is no fun as we begin to lose friends and family.
I’m caring for my husband now so I no longer have as much time for crafting as I once did.
I’ve enjoyed reading your post and will try to come back soon

Hi Carol,
What a lovely piece the Hometown Christmas is, and yes, it does remind me of a Prairie Schooler in many ways. I love how you personalized it and your color choices are all very pretty. I don't think I had ever seen that design before, it's lovely.
I was sorry to hear of the loss of two special people in your husband's and your life. It doesn't matter the age, the time, or circumstances, it is always so sad, and leaves a true void in our lives. It sounds like you have wonderful memories of this woman who was your mom's dear friend, and I hope you keep those close in your heart.
On a positive note, I am glad your husband is healing well and hopefully he will be back on his bicycle very soon and be safe out there.
We continue to have snow, and truly I am well over it at this point. It's very gray and raw as we expect snow and freezing rain into tomorrow which is so disappointing as we reached the low 50's yesterday. It's almost spring, so the weather and temperatures seem to be all over the place, so I can only hope for some serious melting this coming week...fingers crossed.
We traveled last week down south to meet our daughter in law and puppy at the airport in Atlanta. She and my son have been living over seas and are relocating back to the states for my son's job. We were in TN and I saw green grass, forsythia starting to bloom, daffodils in full bloom and tulips coming up which gave me a true shot in the arm for things to come weather wise. It will be wonderful to have longer days as well.
Hope March is a good month for you.
Kathy

I hope you enjoy your bunny stitching, and have a wonderful visit with your grandsons!

I love the changes you made to the embroidery, especially the writing! You know what I've noticed? That every time someone I know dies, a child arrives in another family. It's about experiencing joy and pain, it's life, isn't it? You have to live with courage and hope.

Aww Carol, I'm so sorry for your recent losses, it's bad enough losing one love one, but two so close together is hard. Sending hugs your way.
Your Hometown Christmas piece is beautiful. I had to chuckle to myself when you said it was more stitching than you anticipated. It reminded me of my mum saying my eyes were bigger than my belly, when it came to food. I guess we stitchers' can apply that same analogy to our hobby!
Happy Stitching! Sue xx
