Sunny days and snowy stitching

Hello, all! I hope this post finds you doing well? Thankfully, the second half of July has been much, much quieter than the first and I've had some much-needed "me" time. As an introvert, I relish my alone time and truly need it to "recharge" after a lot of social activities like I had in the first two weeks of July. I know that sounds strange to you extroverts who thrive on parties and get-togethers, doesn't it? But, my fellow introverts understand, don't you? So, how did I spend my quiet time? Well by stitching and reading and puttering around the house, of course!

I actually stitched up three new ornaments, but I'm only going to share two of them with you today. The third isn't fully finished so I'll wait a bit to show you that one. These are my monthly ornaments for the stitch along that I host on Instagram otherwise known as the #12in23ornamentstitchalong. My July ornament is this little cutie by Heart In Hand called "A Very Merry Christmas." It's stitched on 40 ct. woodland brown Newcastle linen and I changed all of the colors except for the white and the light pink due to the darkness of my fabric.

My July ornament: Heart In Hand's "A Very Merry Christmas"

I did make a small change in the design--I left off the stocking that was charted on the right and replaced it with two of the smaller light green trees. I wanted this to resemble a cozy looking Christmas house in the middle of a forest of trees and I love the final result! For the finish, I sewed on a narrow strip of red and white striped fabric bordered by some cheery black fabric with white polka dots. Add a white button, little red ribbon, and some white cording--and there you have it... my July ornament all ready for the Christmas tree!

This one just makes me happy!

August's ornament uses basically the same colors so it was easy to just dive right in and begin stitching. This design is by Lila's Studios and is part of her "Spirit of Christmas, Set 2" chart. Isn't that the prettiest shade of red in the bird? I used the suggested GAST color: "Schoolhouse Red" and, once again, chose to stitch it on 40 ct. woodland brown Newcastle. I love how well white shows up on this pretty shade of brown linen. The green I chose for this piece is CC "Steamed Broccoli."

"Spirit of Christmas, Set 2" by Lila's Studio is my ornament choice for August

The only design change I made was to add three small snowflakes underneath the word "Noel." I just thought it needed "a little something" in that vacant space. I changed the bird's legs to DMC 3021 from the suggested black, too. The finish was easy--just surrounded the entire thing with handmade cording and topped it with a gingham bow, red bell, and some greenery. What do you think? Such a cheery little piece!

August's ornament

It's nice to be a bit ahead in my ornament stitching! Hard to believe there are only five more months left in 2023, isn't it? I'm already looking forward to seeing my Christmas tree all decked out in December!

My July and August 2023 ornament finishes

Giveaway... So, in keeping with the spirit of Christmas, how about the chance to win a little gift today? I have a very sweet one passed on to me from Janet in Texas (thank you so much again, Janet) who sent me many, many charts to use in my giveaways. This is actually an entire kit from Lizzie Kate which includes the chart, a piece of the suggested fabric, and two tiny accent buttons as shown in the photo below. Would anyone like to enter the giveaway? If you'd like to win the kit, please follow the guidelines below. I'll announce the winner in my next blog post--good luck to all!

I'm having a drawing for this Lizzie Kate kit. If you would like to enter, please follow the guidelines below:

To be included in the drawing for this Lizzie Kate kit, please...

1) Specifically mention that you would like to win the kit in your comment

2) Be a follower of Stitching Dreams (in my blog's sidebar on the right)

3) Make sure to leave your email address in your comment if I don't already have it

4) Answer the "Getting to Know You" question below.

Getting to Know You... For those of you who are new to my blog, I like to pose these little questions from time to time so I can get to know my friends and fellow stitchers a bit better. After all, you know a fair amount about me from reading my blog, so I'd love to know more about you. Today's question is: "What one thing can instantly make your day better?" Hmmm... there are many things, but one that really stands out for me is the sound of laughter--especially from my grandson or my sons. I still love hearing all my "boys" (who are now grown men between the ages of 35 and 41!) laughing together as they tease and joke amongst themselves. Nothing warms my heart more than knowing my family is happy and enjoying their time with each other. And now that has spread to my little grandson--oh, how his laughter lights up my day! How about you? I'd love to hear your answer to today's question!

46 years... I did have one big event occur in the past couple of weeks and that was the celebration of 46 years of marriage! What?! How can that be? I met my husband as a teenager--we were just 19-years-old and beginning our second year of college. And then at the age of 22--just two months after our graduation, we were married in 1977. That's almost unheard of in today's world, isn't it? We kind of "grew up" together in a way. But, here we are--still smiling and laughing after all those years. No big party or trip this year--we're saving them for the "big one"--our 50th anniversary in four more years! We celebrated with a quiet dinner out with my middle son and his girlfriend at a local Mexican restaurant. Very simple and casual just the way we like things!

Still laughing together on our 46th wedding anniversary!

How is your garden doing this year? Ours is bursting with flowers and tomatoes right now. They've been loving the sunny weather we've had this season. We feel very blessed to have escaped most of the horrible high temperatures that have swept over much of the U.S. and Europe this summer. In fact, many in our area are joking that people will be wanting to move to southwestern Pennsylvania for our climate! Haha! Anyway, we've been very lucky this summer and our garden seems happy.

The bright and beautiful colors of summer

I like to place my zinnias in individual glass bottles on a little tray. Such a quick, fun arrangement!

My husband wanted me to take a photo of him in the sunflower garden to share with his brothers. He titled it: "Too much fertilizer!"

So, that's about it for July! I hope each of you has a fabulous month of August... We don't have any special plans, but, of course, we hope to see our little grandson at some point. We try to get together at least once a month which isn't always easy given our four hour distance from him. But, it sure is easier than when he lived all the way across the country in San Diego and for that, we are thankful...

Speaking of thanks, I hope you know how much I appreciate each of your sweet comments. I can't always reply to each of you as many of you are "no-reply" commenters and I don't have your email address, but I hope you know I read and appreciate every single comment! Take good care, my friends! Bye for now...

Your Juli ornament looks great and I really like the trees you changed. It looks perfect as a finish. Oh and the little red bird looks great, a lovely shade of red. Regarding your question - I feel the same way, on the one hand sunshine makes me happy, but as a mother I think it is the greatest happiness to see the children happy when they spontaneously hug you with a smile . To know that they are fine and healthy.
Married for 46 years is a rarity in many marriages today. And you two are still a lovely couple. We've been married for 25 years this year, which is also a long time. Our garden is doing well, and we have already been able to harvest a lot of tomatoes. My children have to do that for the next 10 days when my husband and I are on vacation. But I miss the many bees that used to fly around the flowers, and there are a few bumblebees. You don't see that many butterflies either. Oh dear, those are huge sunflowers, fantastic.
I wish you a nice time in August
Hugs, Martina

Hello, oh what lovely stitching. Looks so wonderful. I love the red bird. Well, to your questions,
I love, laughing, sunshine, my kids (grown up), their dogs, being together with friends and good country music.
Congratulations to your anniversary. Well done!
The garden looks a bit poor, cause it is very dry and we are happy to have some rain the other day.
Have a great August and enough time to stitch your wonderful ornies.
Hugs,
Gabi

First of all, congrats on 46 years of marriage!
Your ornament finishes are always so very pretty.
Just simple & pretty, I don't like a lot on finishes.
! thing recently that's been making my day better is watching the baby Chickadees learn how to feed from the dish of seed I put out.
They are soooooo cute to watch, & when I open the door, the chitter chatter is just so cute that it makes me giggle! They have so much energy!
Take 1 seed, go up in the tree & eat it, comeback down take 1 seed....repeat!
Just too darn cute.
Yes, we are lucky here too, that we only had a few days in the 90's.

Your two ornaments are as sweet as ever and I love your "less is more" style of finishing.
My hubby and I are instantly happy when we hear the little chime on our photo frame alerts us to new photos of the grands. We immediately jump up to see what new shenanigans are going on.
We just had the hottest weekend of the year here....it was tough just to walk out and get the mail. But a big storm Saturday night cooled things back down into the 80's.
Hope you have a great week!

Wishing you and Tim a very belated happy anniversary, Carol! Tim and the sunflowers made me chuckle. What a wonderful picture! Your July and August ornaments are pretty ones. I can't believe I have stitched both of them. I really like those two sets from Lila's Studios. Enjoy the last day of July 2023 and have a wonderful start to August.

Love Lizzie Kate and would love to win this kit! The one thing that makes my day is a phone call from my grandkids - they love the call and I know that day will come when calling will not be so appealing to them! I have been married 54 years - husband went to Viet Nam six days after our wedding. We were crazy kids back then but all worked out well. I am also an introvert and love my alone time - time to stitch.

Happy Anniversary! I love your ornaments! I have a few Christmas ones I need to finish and more to stitch up before Christmas. Seeing a baby always makes me happy instantly! I grew up with lots of nieces and nephews and always had one on my hip growing up. We can't wait for our youngest to start having babies. They say in the next year or so. I would love to win the kit! I live in Burgettstown, PA and the weather has been pretty nice this summer.

Congratulations on 46 years Carol! Brian and I began dating in high school. We will reach 31 years this year. That is a lovely picture.
Your ornaments are super!
One thing that can instantly make my day better is stitching. :) Also having my three children together. It does not happen often anymore, but when it does, it is all laughter and I am all smiles.
Tim's sunflower garden is fantastic!!

Your ornaments are beautiful, as usual! I’m going to have to make that sweet bird ornament at some point! I’m sure I have that Lizzie Kate pattern in my stash so I leave it for others to have a chance to win it. I’m like you in that my family is what brings me the most joy. Especially the company of my 12 year old granddaughter. I know we’re fast coming to a time where she won’t want to spend time with her grandparents so we take joy with any time she comes with us now. We like quiet anniversary celebrations with our family. We had a big cruise planned for our 50th, in 2020 but, Covid had shut down all cruising. We finally got that cruise in this February. Off to start work on my August ornaments. I said I wasn’t going to do two a month this year but I like to give some away while keeping some too.

I guess I'm an extroverts but honestly I am finding as I age I just like to have a lazy day in haha. So maybe I'm changing. Love your two new finished ornaments and can't wait to see the next one. Such beautiful finishes as always.

Please enter me into the drawing for the adorable design. I'm definitely Naughty haha.

Hm. I agree with you about laughter. I also love birds and their tweeting and happy noises. Waves crashing at the ocean. Jeremiah my kiddo can always make my day better. Also my dog. I love that he just loves me no matter what.

Happy Anniversary!! Congrats on 46 years! You look very happy together.

My dad plants corn here at the campground and it's the tallest he has ever had. We don't know if it will taste good but wow it's tall. Been a weird dry year so it sure grew different. Plus it was a different seed than he planted before. He has a big garden at his house and for the first time a Opossum decided he wanted to eat all the tomatoes so he unfortunately had to get rid of it. Now he has tomatoes finally. We got to have some yesterday and they were delicious.

Have a wonderful week and amazing August.

First off, Happy happy Anniversary to you both! Such a beautiful picture of you two, precious! WOW! Look at those huge sunflowers though so beautiful. Finally, we are having rain after a couple of dry summer months. Kind of early summer instead of Spring. Now, we are having autumn weather with rain and wind. Suppose to be summer now actually. Lots of tourist who came here for the beach gonna be totally disappointed as expected whole week gonna be rainy and cold.
I love both your monthly ornaments, perfectly finish as always.
Wish you a happy month of August.

Happy Anniversary! And those sunflowers are simply amazing. I am such an introvert and need my quiet time. I haven’t had much lately, but I know it will come. Your ornaments are great and I especially love the cardinal. A beach walk and my grandsons can instantly brighten my day.

Happy Anniversary! Ours is this month on the 18th. Forty four for us and we met in high school and been together ever since. A fellow introvert here so I get it! Lol. Love stitching and creating, also rug hooking. Your ornaments are always gorgeous and perfect in every way. We have had a very hot summer here in Wisconsin so my stitching has been done whenever the mood strikes. Sometimes in the shade on the patio.

I just love the way you finish all your ornaments-wish I had that talent -I’d love to win the Lizzie kit What makes my day better is getting even a tiny bit of stitching time in the morning before I have to leave for work Happy anniversary

What a great photo of you two. Happy 46TH!

I have become an introvert and need peace and alone time. Things have changed a lot since aging!! Time is flying by and after reading only five months until Christmas, I am stunned. And crabby. You're certainly stitching some wonderful ornaments for that time of year.

Can't believe the size of the sunflowers!

Faith... said...

As a fellow introvert, I know exactly what you mean!

A Very Merry Christmas looks fabulous! Good call on changing the stocking, after all who has a stocking hanging around outside? LOL The Spirit of Christmas looks good too. Your finishing is always so flawless and pretty.

I would love to be entered in the drawing for the LK chart. My Grandson sitting down to have a talk with me is what makes my day better. I don't care what he talks about, just so long as we have a talk. He is 17 now so he is more into his friends so it makes me feel special when he feels the need to hold a conversation with me instead of running out to do something with his friends. He is the best grandson ever and helps me out a lot with things I can no longer do.

WOW Happy Anniversary to you two! You are right, it is unheard of these days so a big congratulations goes out to you guys. Love the sunflower picture! He looks very small in the garden!

Hello Carol,
two wonderful new finishes for your Christmas tree. I like your changes.
I would like to win the LK pattern.
Ich denke da gerade wie du, Lachen gehört für mich täglich dazu. Und besonders freue ich mich über meine Kinder, wenn es bei ihnen im Studium sehr gut läuft.
Happy Anniversary to your 46th Wedding day. A long time.
My husband and I celebrate our 30th Wedding day this year. We make a holiday and celebrate it with our three children.
Enjoy the time in August and a big Hugs, Manuela

Regarding "Too Much Fertilizer", I am sure I have never seen sunflowers that tall! Didn't know it was possible!! Congrats on your 46th wedding anniversary! You make a beautiful couple. I love the photo you shared of the two of you. As for your stitching, I always love seeing your most recent creations (and all of them through the years, for that matter). You not only do wonderful stitching, but your finishes are perfect, too!

Me time is a good way to recharge and get refreshed. The two recently finished ornaments are sweet as can be especially how you’ve finished them. Great idea putting a single flower in a small vase. Hmmm….I think I shall try. Happy Belated Anniversary. I know a couple who waited to take a special trip on the year of their golden anniversary when Covid hit. A huge disappointment. Other issues developed after the shut down and the couple was unable to go I’m sorry to say. The sunflowers are so tall perhaps you saw them growing by the day. Enjoy the last full month of summer!

What wonderful finishes! I especially love the red bird. I love all things birds and gardens - my birding has been quite fun this year but the garden well.... tough going with the poor weather, and from the deer who have now decided my garden veggies and flowers are theirs to take! I do love seeing them in the yard though - such pretty animals! Congratulations on 46 ys! It was 40 in June for may husband and I. I would love to be put in for the Lizzie Kate stitching. SO nice of you to do a giveaway. Enjoy Aug and the last of the summers fun. Best, Lee butler83ataoldotcom

Happy Anniversary to you! Our story is much the same as yours. We met in junior high, began to date in high school and were married a year after we graduated. We had our 51st anniversary in July.

The two ornaments are so pretty. I love to stitch little houses. They're just so cozy. And, a red bird and Christmas just go together perfectly! Beautiful finishes once again!

Love the sunflower picture. I once used garden soil in a pot without reading the directions. It should have been mixed with regular soil. I had gigantic zinnias.

What instantly makes my day better? There are lots of things, but the top answer would be hearing from my children or grandchildren. Just their first words brings happiness.

Enjoy your quieter August. I know what you mean by needed time alone. I'm an introvert and have social anxiety, so quiet time is a must.

Two more lovely ornaments and not stitched on black this time! Although I am pleased to see the black fabric trim.
Congratulations on your Anniversary. 46 years is a great achievement. I was married at 21. And again at 41. I’m not planning to repeat this for my 61st however!
I do enjoy being sociable but I also like my “me time”. My favourite part of the day is the first few minutes after everyone has left the house in the morning and it’s perfectly silent. Bliss!

Barbara Wolverine Lake Mich. I would love to win the Christmas kit :) I'll tell you what makes me instantly happy - seeing a hummingbird at the feeder! I have to work hard at it. If I leave the feeder up overnight I have pesky raccoons who drink it up and make a sticky mess all over the flowers below. If I take it into the garage somehow the black ants find it and get inside. I haven't yet found a good solution other than fresh water every day (I make it weekly and keep in the fridge). I've been stitching Christmas ornaments, I have 4 done on a piece of linen that will fit 10. Prarie Schooler instruction book. Just took a completed sampler in for framing! I was working on that since January. (Brenda Gervais) Anyway Hi to everyone :) rhubarb73@comcast.net

Happy August, Carol! As an introvert myself, I certainly know how you feel about 'too many social events' and not enough quiet time - sometimes, I just don't want to see anybody!
Your ornaments are really cute. It's impressive for how long you've been keeping your 'one ornament a month' streak now.
One thing that can make my day better...actually, getting a kind email, or comment on my blog, really brightens up my day! Or a friend texting (please not calling, I get spooked by unexpected calls LOL) out of the blue, letting me know they are thinking about me. Also. chocolate, of course ;)
Congratulations on 46 years of marriage! My husband and I met at the beginning of university, I was also 19 years old and he was 20. We only got married 8 years later though, so we've been together for 13 years, lived together for 9 and married for 5. Does that still count as 'it still happens today'? We certainly did a fair share of growing up together!

Congratulations on 46 years of marriage! In December it will be 39 years for my husband and me.
I would love to stitch the Lizzie Kate kit. Like you, the one thing that always brightens my day is my boys! I have 3 sons and 4 grandsons! Anytime they stop by or call always makes me happy! My husband can (usually) put a smile on my face too!
The picture of your husband with the sunflowers is amazing! I don't think I have ever seen sunflowers that tall.
I always look forward to your next blog to see your wonderful finishes!
