Welcome! Welcome! The 11th annual "Parade of Ornaments" is about to begin! It's going to be a cold, snowy day here in western Pennsylvania--not exactly parade watching weather. But, oh--that's right, how could I forget? No big gatherings are permitted anyway due to Covid-19. So it's a good thing you're all snuggled safe and warm in your own homes... Grab a warm beverage (hot cocoa for me!) and sit back and relax as the parade is about to begin.
2020 was a difficult year for me to keep up with finishing my ornaments because I was away from home so much. In May and June, I was up in New York much of the time trying to nurse my mom back to health. And then, the months of July and October were spent in sunny San Diego delighting in my new baby grandson. I can't finish ornaments away from home--there are just too many bits and pieces involved. I finish my ornaments by audtioning various combinations of fabrics and cording and buttons and ric-rak and bells, etc. In other words, by the time I've decided on a finish, my house is turned upside down with boxes and drawers scattered here and there, various fabrics tossed on furniture, and buttons, bows, and ric-rak strewn everywhere. (Unlike many of you, I do not have a craft/sewing room). This process happens each and every time I finish an ornament as I search for the "perfect little combination" that makes me smile, nod my head, and say: "That's it!" When that perfect combination happens, it's like a "Eureka" moment. Sometimes it comes right away, sometimes I let things sit for a while, sometimes I let things sit for days! Very rarely do I have a finish in mind when I begin stitching an ornament. How does your finishing process work?
This year, there is no theme to my 12 ornaments, although, as usual, most of them are Prairie Schooler designs. In fact this year half of them are! I needed a lot of "comfort stitching" this year due to my mother being so ill and her eventual death in July and I can always count on Prairie Schooler to offer me that solace. Here are all twelve lined up on my bannister--same old yellow hallway, same old red dining room in the background. Each year, I tell myself, "Next year your rooms will be painted a different color!" But, after 11 years of parades--I still haven't gotten around to painting my walls. Procrastination is my middle name, sometimes!

Since I haven't shared my December ornament with you until today, I wanted to tell you a bit about it. The design is Part Five of the Little House Needleworks "Jack Frost's Tree Farm" series and is called "Hot Cocoa." As I mentioned above, hot cocoa is the only hot drink I enjoy! Aren't I strange? People always ask me, "Well, how do you get going in the morning without coffee or tea?" Sadly, it's sugar--the first thing I eat (and it's just one), is a chocolate covered almond from Trader Joe's. Naughty Carol... Oh well, I suppose it's no worse than putting a teaspoon of sugar in coffee or tea, right? And, at least, the almond is healthy! Anyway--back to my December finish. Here is a close-up for you as the photo above was taken on a dull December day and this shows the colors a bit better.

Isn't it cute? I love that tiny snowman with his cardinal buddy resting nearby. For this finish, I used a random assortment of overdyed and DMC threads on some mystery 40 ct. gray linen (which wasn't my favorite). The final finish (shown above under "December"), includes two different fabrics separated by cream colored ric-rak, green cording, a green gingham bow ripped from a piece of fabric, and a little yo-yo made of the same fabric as the bow.
FAVORITES... So, which one do you like the most? It's a hard decision, but the little mouse, "Miss June," with her sweet apron just makes my heart smile. I truly love the With Thy Needle and Thread mouse designs and I know I'll be stitching more in the future. But, my other favorite is the beautiful July Prairie Schooler angel that I stitched in memory of my mom who passed away on July 24th. Oh, how I miss her...

The chart features ten red-cloaked Santas in various sizes and shapes. I just love that teeny-tiny one in the front right! So, that wraps up another parade! I still can't believe I've been doing this since 2010... I hope you're all winding up your Christmas preparations (I still haven't finished my cards or even my tree, but I'm almost there). My goal is to have everything done by Sunday so I can just sit back and relax until Christmas day. It will certainly be a different Christmas for all this year, but we just have to make the best of it. I for one love that yellow wall and red dining room. They are classics and classics don't go out of style. So, you just keep stitching and sharing and don't worry you mind about the background. My favorite is always really hard to choose, but from the moment I saw Father Christmas with that basket of apples I couldn't get it out of mind. I rarely make quick purchases these days, but I mulled that over about a week and then went a hunting for the pattern. I found it on Ebay and not even a bad price. Hopefully, I can stitch him in '21 and personalize him for a Florida Santa. I do take a long time to figure out how I want to finish a piece. I can very much relate to your description of things being tossed about while you decide. That would have certainly been the scene before I got a room. I don't take it for granted not one bit. I also had continual messes when I was teaching and working on a special unit. It is just life.

Well, you know I love the little mice! They're so cute (much more attractive than any that get caught in a vacuum ;( ). Overall, I just love all the little details in these pieces. I have to take time to look at each one--I always miss something (like the little cardinal friend below the Cocoa Stand). As for eating chocolate-covered almonds in the am...why not?! Beauteous ornaments, Care. Always admire your talent and the thought you put into your finishes.
Oh Carol...there’s no way to pick a favorite. Each one has its own special charm. Maybe the January firehouse since my son is a fire fighter. You are giving me inspiration to do the same.. not only an ornament a month but I also like how you added them to the garland on the bannister. I was just thinking mine railing decor was looking tired! Love the Santa’s pattern but not interested.....too many

Another beautiful ornament parade, Carol! Each one is lovely and you have a good mix. The non PS favorite is the Redbird in the Snowglobe. Was this a kit or a chart from Bent Creek? My favorite PS ornament is the PS Santa 1991. I drink all three -- coffee all year, tea at random times, and cocoa during random times in winter. Yum on the chocolate covered almonds. If they are dark, then would be even healthier.
My favorite is the angel you stitched for your dear Mom. It is just beautiful. I am amazed you can fit 12 more ornaments every year on your tree! And you have a big tree!! We will go to my Mom's house out on the driveway on Christmas Day. Even in the frigid cold. We will safely exchange gifts and that is about it. We will at least see each other. Oh how I miss kissing and hugging my family!!
Wonderful and beautiful parade! It's chilly in the desert this week so it was nice to attend the parade from inside my warm home with a hot cup of coffee.
I really did try to pick a favorite; seriously I did; I looked at each one and said "you're my favorite". In the end I couldn't do it so they're all my favorite.

I bought an oval tracing template so that I can try to do some of the Santa finishes like yours. I am late with my cards, too, this year and last week the post office was out of shipping materials, too! I guess that's what I get if I wait until the first week of December to mail things! It is Prairie Schooler Father Christmas in blue. My mother’s favorite color was blue. She designed her home in colonial blue. Her home was so warm and inviting. It's so hard to pick a favourite ornament, they are all stitched and finished so beautifully. If I had to though, it would be the PS ones, love those.
I haven't written any cards either yet, but don't send many anymore so it won't take long. Like you I hope to have all the necessary things done by Sunday, we have two more Birthdays before Santa arrives :-)

This is my first year to see your ornaments and I am impressed! They are all beautiful and finished so nicely. My favorite ones are "Blitzen Glistens' and July "Angels". So hard to decide. I looked back through your past Parades and they are all wonderful! I love them displayed on the stairs. I am inspired for 2021....I will be happy to finish six...one every other month for my first year!
Merry Christmas...one of those bittersweet ones this year. There is nothing like a new grandbaby to cause a celebration. Mine are teens and we're still celebrating what blessings they are. Oh, I drink coffee.

Hi, Carol! My favorite ornament is October (Merry). I just love the way you finished it. But honestly, I love them all. It’s hard to pick just one.
Do you do your own painting? I used to, but these days we’d have to hire someone, and this is not the time you or I would want a bunch of strangers in our home working. We’ve put off painting and new floors because of Covid, and now with college right around the corner for Thomas, we may need to put projects off even longer.
Finishing is sometimes a four-letter word for me. I have to be in the right mood for it, and often I just think and think for weeks or months before tackling it. I try not to compare my finishes to others’. If I did, I would be too intimidated to ever finish anything. I took your advice about taking your time, and I’ve found that if I work slowly, carefully and thoughtfully, I like the result much more than if I just try to “get it done.” It makes all the difference between proudly displaying something versus wanting to hide it in a drawer because I’m not happy with it.

Merry Christmas Carol. This is my first time commenting but I've been receiving your monthly emails for a couple years, and I've saved each one for future reference. I started cross stitching in the mid-1970s and stitched until the late 1980s when I returned to work after taking a few years off after the birth of my two children.
I was so busy with a very demanding job in local government finance and eventually raising two children on my own that sadly I never had time to stitch again. Happily, I'm now 70 and retired, and after coming across your blog a couple years ago I was inspired to start stitching again. I've found it's more difficult now with older eyes and fingers numbed by carpal tunnel, but I'm enjoying it so much even though I'm very slow now. I just want to thank you for inspiring me to start stitching again. Karen Swan (formerly of Pennsylvania :) but now living in Michigan).

I do like the Merry Mouse... and of course the Hot Cocoa Stand... but the Blitzen Glistens catches my eye the most and makes me smile! I think it's the sparklies....I've been on a real glitter kick this season! :-) I'd be thrilled if I won the Santa Chart! Looks like a festive stitch.... the snowflakes look like they could be french knots.....though I'd probably use beads.....for sparkle! lol! Yes.... this would be a super enjoyable stitch! What a beautiful collection - so lovely that it is hard to select a favorite! I think the March Santa (with all the fruit!) is my favorite, due to the unusual inclusion of a pineapple!! It's very difficult to pick just one, but if I did it would be February's Red Bird Globe. A close second would be May PS Santa's Night.

It’s very hard to choose a favorite - I love them all, but I do have an extra soft spot in my heart for the March ornament, the PS 1991 annual Santa. Quel ravissement pour les yeux que ce défilé d'ornements ! C'est fabuleux. Je les aime tous beaucoup avec un coup de coeur pour celui de février, de juin, de septembre et octobre.
J'admire les finitions pour vos coussinets, si je savais faire les miens auraient meilleure allure.
La décoration de la maison et du sapin est en place. Mon mari s'est chargé de mettre quelques guirlandes lumineuses à l'extérieur pour apporter un peu de couleur en ces temps moroses.
Je bois du café, du thé et des tisanes (tilleul, camomille, verveine...) et de temps à autre un chocolat chaud.
Le modèle avec tous les pères Noël est charmant.
Nous fêterons Noël avec nos enfants et notre petite fille, nous serons 6. Mes parents nous les verrons le 24 pour leur apporter leurs cadeaux, nous serons masqués et resteront à bonne distance pour les préserver.

Not only is the ornament beautiful but the way you put the final touches on them is what makes it gorgeous. I found your blog by looking for some sites to get me back into stitching. I love the Santa on September. Of course June is cute too but then they all are! I love coffee in the morning and now with the Keurig there are so many flavors to try; yummy. Occasionally nothing else will do except for hot chocolate but please hold the marshmallows! Are you going to San Diego for the holiday?

I love your ornaments and I'm looking forward to your parade again this year, it's always so nice to look at. Like a book that one likes to pick up. Your ornaments are all so beautifully processed that I just have to memorize a few ideas.
Oh - I'm a coffee drinker, but in the cold season, I like to enjoy tea in the evening. And almonds are also allowed. You have to treat yourself to something.
Which one do I like best? It's difficult, I think it's the November and December motifs. I like this reindeer with the little cardinals, and I also associate the cocoa stand with a visit to a Christmas market.

Oh, it’s already 11. Ornament Parade, congratulations on it, this year it looks great again. For all of us the year 2020 was not easy, I very much hope that 2021 will get better!!!! Your Chrismtas ornaments parade is one of my favourite blog moments of the year. I love how you decorate your house! If I had to choose one, this year would be October. That 'merry' design is really cheerful and 2020 has been a hard year for all of us, so we need a bit more of merriness in our lives.
As for coffee or cocoa... I'm a tea drinker. ;-)
Carol: I love all your ornament's but I have to say October is my favorite I love the words and the finishing.

I love the "Red Bird Globe." Something about red birds speak to me. Maybe it is because they are so bright and cheerful. I love the wives tale that when you spot one - someone in Heaven is thinking of you.

They are all so beautiful it is hard to choose. but, like you, I love PS so your March Santa wins my vote. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas in spite of all the regulations. We will be able to visit with Laurie in person as she has only been around three people(who she works with) and they are fine. Like you, we will do facetime with the grand children!!
Oh Carol, you do this to us every year, how can we possibly choose a favourite. But .. if I have to , the one that stands out to me is the "Merry" for October, the Hands On Design piece.
I don't have a craft room so I have to use the dining table. I'm not sure how many miles I cover going up and down stairs. Sometimes I know exactly how I'm going to finish something, others are still languishing in THE pile until that bit of inspiration comes to me.
I usually have a coffee as a first drink of the day (and it's usually about an hour after I've eaten breakfast) and then tea for the rest of the day. It works out to about 3 mugs a day and then I'll be drinking water throughout the day.

I love June, July and October. I have seen the July angel on another blog and I loved it then. Miss Mouse is charming. Hard to defuse. I applaud your perseverance and love the way you display the ornaments. This has been a hard year for us all, but you have had unique sadness and joys. What an amazing collection! My favorite ornament is the one from October. I love the simplicity, the symmetry, and the fact that you said it looks so "bright!" I’ve stitched the mouse in the sewing room for my friend who found “evidence of mice” in a fabric box in her sewing room. How appropriate. 😊

A gorgeous ornament parade as always Carol! I am so impressed with all your “over one” stitching and if I had to pick a favorite, it would be a tie between January and October - just love them both, but the others aren’t far behind! My finishing process is more like - ooh, I finished stitching it, let’s put it away in a drawer for years since I don’t know how I want to finish it, and then at some point, I get a little kick in the pants and finish 3 or 4 at a time. I have actually done really well this year setting some time aside for FFO’ing and now have more done than waiting, with a few more in progress as of yesterday. Hope you enjoy the quiet of this holiday with fond memories of your mom (and dad), and joy with your grandson over FaceTime.

I love your yearly ornament parades, Carol! It's always such a highlight at Christmas time. I think my favourite this year would be October, closely followed by June and February, but of course they all look great.
You certainly had an eventful 2020, even more so than most of us - I hope the holidays, strange as they may be this year, will bring you some time to relax, unwind, and center yourself.
I, for one, will never grow tired of seeing your tree and your ornaments! You've created such treasures that I know will be passed down to future generations! Someday, some will say, my great-great grandmother stitched this! My favorite this year is September's Santa Moon. I love crescent Santa's and love how you created this ornament with double circles! Second favorite is October's Cranberry Christmas. Just love this one; simple yet beautiful! I'll be looking forward to your new ornaments in 2021!

I really like the little Mouse from With Thy Needle but I am also a fan of the black fabric you used on quite a few. I think that's my resolution for this year - stitch more on black! It looks so effective for Christmas designs.
