The middle of February already! How did that happen? I always look forward to this short month of February as I feel that the worst of winter is over. And what a winter it's been here in the East! I can't remember having snow on the ground continuously (for most of January and February) in a long, long time. Thankfully, our deep freeze seems to be waning--it will be in the 40s this weekend. I know, I know... for those of you in the South or in California, you are thinking that still sounds quite cold. But... after weeks of not coming anywhere near the freezing point, 40° sounds darn good to us!
So, what has been keeping me busy since I definitely avoid going outside at all costs? Well, three things--reading/listening to a couple of good books, stitching (of course), and spending way too much time browsing online looking for a mother-of-the-groom dress for my youngest son's wedding in June. Oh, boy... what a process! I've already tried on 7 dresses and my petite stature is not doing me any favors when it comes to long gowns. They are just overwhelming/swimming on me! They do make a few petite dresses, but none that I've really liked. Thankfully, both Macy's and Nordstrom offer free shipping for the dresses and then I can return them at my local stores so that is very helpful. It's just an extremely frustrating process. At age 71, I'm truly feeling like the grandmother of the groom rather than the mother. Sigh... I may have one possibility, though, so I'll be taking that dress into Nordstrom to see if alterations can easily be made. Any advice for mother of the bride/groom dress shopping? All suggestions are welcome!
Anyway, back to my stitching... I've managed to stitch and finish my ornaments for January and February and both just happen to be Prairie Schooler designs. The first one is from the "Old World Santas" (Bk. No. 80) chart and is stitched on 40 ct. raw natural Newcastle linen. I changed the colors a bit and eliminated the base that Santa was standing on.
 |
| A new "Old World Santa" finish for January |
As you can see, I wanted to make this an oval finish so I added lots of Smyrna-stitched snowflakes surrounding Santa. I then used handmade cording (DMC 221 to match Santa's robe) and a burgundy checked ribbon to embellish the top.
 |
| Oval and round finishes are my favorites. |
If this finish looks familiar it's because this is the fourth Santa in this series that I've finished the same way. Love seeing them all together! There are four more in this chart, but I only have enough gingham ribbon to finish one more. Of course, I can always change it up... we'll see!
 |
| Such a handsome quartet! Do you have a favorite? Mine is the Santa with the walking stick and the little bird (on the far left). |
February's ornament brought this cute galloping deer carrying Santa and his bag of toys. This is from the "Santa Rides" (Bk. no. 47) chart. I rarely change colors in Prairie Schooler designs, but I did this time. I used DMC 610 (rather than the charted 844) for the deer so he would resemble the local deer that visit our backyard. I also changed the color of the motifs surrounding the deer, to white. They were charted as a sort of pale yellow color (DMC 3046) and I just didn't care for that look.
 |
| Another Prairie Schooler Santa finish for February |
To finish it, I created a simple pillow ornament bordered by green cording with just a touch of green ric-rac peeking out between the (40 ct. raw natural Newcastle) linen and the accent fabric.
 |
| "Santa Rides" his deer with some color changes |
I tried something new to hang the rusty bells from the right side... I took three strands of DMC and braided them to create hangers for the bells and I love the look! Will definitely be doing this again. Here's a close-up for you...
 |
| To hang the bells, I simply braided some strands of DMC floss. |
So, one-sixth of the 2026 ornaments are finished--ha ha! One-sixth sounds so much more impressive than 2 out of 12, doesn't it? On to March--time to select a new chart! I have an huge folder of ornament charts that I love browsing through to find my next project.
 |
| Two down--ten to go for 2026! |
So, do you celebrate Valentine's Day? I think this is the first year in a long time that I didn't stitch a single thing for the holiday. But, I did do a bit of decorating in the corner of my kitchen. These are my "mostly red" ornaments, the "mostly pink" ones never saw the light of day this year, I'm sorry to say... They're still buried in a dresser drawer and, at this point, they'll just have to be patient and wait another year! I bought the sweet felted mice on Amazon and thought they made a perfect addition to my tiered tray display this year. If you have any questions about the stitched pieces, just let me know... I was too lazy to link them to previous posts this time :)
 |
| Such a bright, happy corner of my kitchen! |
 |
| I love the sweet white mouse couple carrying the fuzzy red heart! |
 |
| Sending all of you a little L-O-V-E today! Aren't their little gold bow ties and hairbows adorable? |
 |
| Happy Valentine's Day to you all! |
 |
| "V is For Valentine" (by Heartstring Samplery) hanging on the wall is one of my favorites! |

Giveaway time... I received a wonderful package of birthday gifts from my friend, April, in Virginia, a couple weeks ago. In the package she thoughtfully included some small-sized charts that she said I could use for giveaways. Wasn't that sweet? So, why not start today? The first one I'm offering is just perfect for this time of year and is called "Spring Delivery" by With Thy Needle and Thread. Would you like to be entered into the drawing to win this darling chart? If so, please leave me a comment below with the answer to the question: "What is your favorite fabric to stitch on and why?" I think you all know mine: 40 ct. Newcastle linen! I love the feel of it, the weight, the muted colors. I don't like fabric to distract from the design itself which is why I often use basic colors like white, ivory, gray, or various shades of brown. But, the primary reason I love it is because I am able to stitch with just one thread--so much easier, in my opinion! If you do want to be entered to win this chart, please make sure to include you email address (if I don't already have it). And thank you again to my generous friend, April--your charts will be much appreciated by the lucky winner of the one below and those offered in the future!
 |
| I'm giving away this sweet chart by With Thy Needle and Thread. If you would like to be entered into the drawing, please follow the guidelines above. I'll post the winner on my next post. |
I'll leave you with some wintry photos...hope to have sunnier spring photos the next time I post. Thank you, as always, for taking the time to read my little blog and say "hello" in your comments--I truly appreciate each of you! Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate and I hope everyone enjoys the rest of this short month. Take care all! Bye for now...
 |
| It's been such a cold year that even the deer have become frequent visitors to our bird feeders. Isn't this buck magnificent?! We usually only spot female deer so seeing this handsome guy was quite a treat. |
 |
| No, my little grandson wasn't running around in the snow. These are all deer tracks shown in this night time photo! We call it our deer superhighway :) |
 |
With the sunshine comes melting icicles. Can you spot the tiny water drop falling from the middle icicle hanging just outside our bedroom window? Spring is coming soon (hopefully)! |

I like the Santa with the small Christmas tree, but they are all wonderful. Maybe stitching some Easter designs will hurry warmer weather your way???? Yes, it's been a bitter season for so many in the USA this year.
But as I make this comment, we have a window open and I'm thinking I should take time out to take off my shoes and socks and put on some sandals! It's warm here today!!
Hi Carol, it has been a long winter, hasn’t it? Here, on the west shore of Lake Michigan, we’ve had the bitter cold for about 10 days, but have missed some of the storms that have come your way. But, today was 45 and they are predicting a 50 for Monday. Spring is on its way! Your new ornaments are so cute and finished perfectly, of course! What’s not to love about Prairie Schooler?! I didn’t get all of my Valentine decor out either. It seemed to come so quick this year! Your little corner in the kitchen is so cute and easily changed for the season.
We have a few deer visiting us almost every night, too. We’re on the edge of town and they found my bird feeders! The buck that’s visiting yours is a handsome boy!
Happy Valentine’s Day! Cherie in WI
One of the things I love about blogging is the slice of life in all places. I truly can't even imagine snow covering the ground or freezing weather like my northern friends have had this year. Of course, no one wants 100 degree temps with high humidity.
The picture of the icicle is truly amazing. What a capture of the drop happening!
There is nothing like PS Santas period. They are just so perfect. I don't think I have a favorite linen or count. I love your vintage country mocha, but sometimes 40 count can wear my eyes out. I think I do better with 36 using the one strand of floss that can make you not want 2 strands. But every now and then I love me some good 28 count especially depending on the linen and pattern.
Stay warm and hoping some thawing out happens soon.
Happy Valentine's Day! I don't celebrated it but I do send my daughter a greeting. I buy myself a heart of chocolate candy😁I'd like to be entered! I love love WDW Straw in 36ct. White floss pops on it and red looks great on it. So does Brethren Blue by GAST, which reminds me as soon as I'm settled into my new place, I want to finish the piece that uses Brethren Blue. I think it's by Hello From Liz Mathews and it's called Always. How exciting that you're looking for your dress! Won't be long now! Happy stitching, Carol!
Bonjour Carol
Have a lovely and nice Valentine Day !
MM
Love the Christmas ornaments .
Hope you find your dress soon.
Here we have our first sunny day for weeks , It is so bright after weeks of darkness of rain which will start again tomorrow .
We still have many floods every where .
My parts for my PC are coming today so Kate and Shane can get me up and running again.
I have to wear my sunglasses it's so bright .
I have my Spring flowers out but they sit in water.
Have a fun week end , hugs June.
I'm down in South Carolina not too far from Charlotte and we had a snow about a week ago now that fell about 12" high! Took 3 days to go away and was I glad to see it go!
Happy Valentines Day!
as always, your finishes are so pretty.
My favorite is the one you just finished.
Cute Valentines corner.
We haven't had big snowstorms here, just little ones that piled up.
It's been in the 40's this week, so it is melting, 50's next week!
I noticed it stays lighter a bit later at night now. :)

I love stitching on 16 ct aida. Easier on the old eyes than any linen! Enjoy reading your posts and seeing the finishes. Very encouraging! dlmskumm@msn.com
Happy Valentine’s Day to you. Hope you have a wonderful day. Like you, I did not stitch a single Valentine cross stitch this year. I was busy finishing previous stitches. I love to stitch on is lugana because it comes in many beautiful colors. At my age it is much easier to see 32 or 36 count. I find I don’t have to rip out so many stitches. I love to read your comments about what is happening in your life. Have you tried going to a bridal house to look for a dress for your son’s wedding?
Hi Carol! I enjoyed seeing your Valentine display. Those mice are just too cute! Prairie Schoolers are my favorite. I have been stitching the yearly Santas since 1984. I just saw the 2026 Santa and he is a cutie. My favorite cloth is Vintage Country Mocha Aida. This cloth pairs well with any stitching projects. I am a neutral girl. Happy Valentine’s Day to you! ❤️
Happy Valentine's Day, Carol! We don't really celebrate (my husband is of the 'it's all consumerism anyway' variety) but I always make sure to make him a gift. Good thing I started early this year too, because I've been dreadfully sick all week and wouldn't have been able to do anything last minute! I am so ready for winter, the cold, and the flu season to be over!
I'd love to be included into the giveaway, what a darling chart. My favourite fabric to stitch on - I love 32ct Murano, I think my stitches just look perfect and neat in that size. But 40ct Verdal is slowly becoming a close second! Generally, I prefer even weave to linen.
Your new ornaments are so precious! Love the braided look of the finishing, I did that for some ornaments years ago and really liked it.
As for dress shopping, my advice always is to get something simple, then asseccorize. More versatile and easier to find something you really like!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Carol! Thank you for the photos of your yard and the snow. I lived in Western PA all my life (quite near to you, I think) and moved out of the area a few years ago so I love seeing the “old neighborhood”! I am not doing as much stitching as I should but when I do, I gravitate to 16 ct Aida these days. I have always been afraid of trying 40 ct but your comment about using one thread might be the push I needed! You have an excellent eye for color and your pieces look beautiful on the Newcastle. Thank you for sharing your stitching (and life) with us - it is a wonderful and generous gift!
Love your finishes! Your little corner always makes me happy. The. mice are so cute! My petite mom had good luck at Dillards. Sometimes VonMaur has good options too. She ended up wearing black pants that almost looked like a dress with a cute jacket. We can see green grass finally in Indiana. Thanks for sharing!
Happy Valentine's Day, Carol! I love the vignette you have created in the corner of your kitchen. It is so pretty. Both of your ornaments have kicked off 2026 beautifully. How fun that you are starting with Prairie Schooler Santas! I hope you have found a dress for the upcoming wedding. The buck you shared at the end is very handsome. Have a great last half of February.
Happy Valentines Day Carol: This month is flying by it is already half the month gone, soon i hope to see green grass and drink my coffee on the front porch. Your ornament designs are wonderful your finishing is exquisite, love seeing how you finish a project.
your valentine display is beautiful, so much eye candy to enjoy, how lovely you received the giveaway package, please do not include me in the giveaway but my favorite fabric count is 32-26 count.
We are also lucky to have deer visit out back yard, they are so majestic to watch.
Catherine❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just love all your Christmas ornaments. My favorite fabric to stitch on is 14 count Aida because it is the easiest for me to see. I envy everyone who stitches on 40 count linen because it is so beautiful. But at least I can still stitch. I am interested in your drawing.
Carol, we’ve had just one blast of cold air this winter, but I know other areas of our country have had bitter cold and storms. Today, Valentine’s Day, it is raining! We have not had rain in weeks so it is very welcome. I put out a few Valentine things for my own pleasure. I made a heart-shaped wreath years ago that I always hang somewhere. I love your white mice!!!!!! Good luck with the dress search. I went through it twice and it was no fun!!!! I did not have to look for a long gown….that made it easier. Carol in Texas
Carol,
I always look forward to your post as it brings me out of the chaos so often found on social media. You are a gentle, peaceful soul and your stitching and pictures give me that ahhhhhh.moment ! It has been a very long, cold winter by us (IL) but so beautiful as well. The snow stayed white and sparkled for weeks.
Thanks for your inspiration and have a wonderful Valentine’s Day. I can’t wait to see your dress for the wedding .🥰
Happy Valentines Day to you! Living in lower SE Michigan, we too are ready for all the snow to disappear!! We have had some great weather this week and more coming next week. Think the temps next week call for some open doors or windows to enjoy some fresh air.
As always I love all your stitch work. I don’t know that I really have a favorite color of linen to stitch on but I do tend to stay in the white/beige family. I did a witch pattern by Brenda Gervais a few years back that called for a bright green and I just couldn’t get enough of her!!! I ended up making 5 of them and I still have some linen left so I might make a few more up this year.
Enjoy your day! Annette
It's been rain rain and more rain here but today we had a little bit of sun. Your Santas are lovely as is your Valentine's display. Happy Valentine's Day
Happy Valentines Carol! great finish on the christmas ornaments. I love your valentine display. I got inspired by you and other friends and created one at my house this year. Come check out my blog.
I will pass the giveaway chart this time , looking forward to your next giveaway.
Lovely pics of the snow and the visitors.
This winter in PA has been hard. I am patiently awaiting spring. However, I never forget that in PA March is blizzard month. We usually get our worst snow storms in March.
I really look forward to your blog posts. You are such a talented stitcher. I prefer the stitch on 28 count lugana.
Happy Valentine's Day, Carol.

I love these embroideries you're showing us today!!
The truth is, this cold weather makes us want to stay indoors.
It's rained quite a bit here in Seville, and although the temperatures are mild, the rain has kept us indoors.
Hugs from Spain
Bonne Saint Valentin.
Amitiés de France.
Love your Santas and the Finishing. My favorite fabric to stitch on is the French country mocha usually in 28 or 32 count.
I love your Santas and the Finishing is fantastic. My favorite fabric is either 28 or 32 count French country mocha. Happy Valentines Day! Tgceulers@gmail.com
Happy Valentine s day dear Carol. How wonderful your stitching is. Love the Santas. The chart is in my collection but when should I stitch all the beautiful patterns I collected over the years? Your finishing is as always perfekt.
Oh I know how difficult it is to find the right dress for the wedding.
Werther is very changeable at the moment. Wait for warmer temperatures and sunshine.
Have a happy weekend, Gabi
I forgot to say how lovely your deco is and my favorite fabric is 40ct Newcastle.
