Christmas Ornaments on Black

Hello, my stitching friends! I hope this post finds you doing well and enjoying the countdown to Christmas! First of all I want to thank you for your lovely (and always appreciated!) comments on my last post. I usually try to thank those of you who I have emails for, but I haven't been on my computer very much between trying to decorate, bake, and get my Christmas cards out. Why, I haven't even gotten Baby N's first Christmas ornament stitched yet! Hopefully, this weekend... On top of all that, I'm still struggling off and on with cold symptoms after an entire month. I did test for Covid and it was negative. It's the strangest thing--every other day, I seem to feel poorly and then the alternate days I have more energy and the cold symptoms are lessened. I went through this same thing last year in November/December and it's so frustrating! Anyway... I have been squeezing in time to stitch each evening and managed to finish my final two ornaments for the #12in25ornamentstitchalong that I host over on Instagram.

For November, I stitched "Winter Rose Manor Pincushion" (which is part of the "Winter Rose Manor" chart) by With Thy Needle and Thread. It is stitched "over one" on 25 count black Lugana using all of the suggested threads, but one. I did change the cardinal's face to DMC 844 so it would show up better on the black. I also added (and rearranged) a few of the snowflakes.

"Winter Rose Manor Pincushion"

I do love a round or oval finish, don't you? I added some handmade cording (using DMC ecru), a satin bow, and some pearl-headed pins around the perimeter. At the top, I simply glued a larger "pearl" that I had snipped from a Christmas floral pick. What do you think?

Don't you love that cardinal and the colors in this piece?

These sweet mice in "Plum Pudding" (also by With They Needle and Thread) had been squeaking at me for years to "Please, please stitch us!" This month, I finally took a deep breath, picked up my needle, and got started. And although it took a while, I love the final result of my December ornament. This one is also stitched "over one" on 25 count black Lugana, but I did change many of the threads. The green dress is done in DMC 3347 and the red in Colour & Cotton "Cherry Cobbler." I also made their wee shoes match the colors of their dresses (I think those mice have more of a fashion sense than I do, that's for sure :).

"Plum Pudding" mice in the kitchen

To finish it into an ornament, I simply made it into a little pillow, surrounded it with green cording (and a very, very short hanger because I ran out of DMC 3347!), and added a polka-dot bow. This is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I love to bake (although I don't do it nearly as much as I did when my three sons were living here) and I plan on incorporating this ornament into a cute baking-themed display that I have planned for my kitchen. Stay tuned...

My December ornament--hard to believe another year of ornament stitching has come to an end!

I think you can see from my final two 2026 ornaments, that my taste in Christmas decorations is very eclectic. I have to say, though, that the ornaments stitched on black are among my favorites. This year, they've taken over my Pottery Barn cubby for Christmas. Here are 24 others that might provide you with a bit of inspiration... As always, my mom's sweet silhouette graces the center cubby and she is surrounded by angels. I miss her so very much, but never more than at Christmas time...

My ornaments on black have taken over my Pottery Barn cubby for December

I took some close-up photos of the ornaments that you might enjoy. Do you have a favorite among these? I think mine is the one right above my mom with the two little angels holding five golden rings. I stitched it way back in 2012! "Five Golden Rings" was designed by Cottage Garden Samplings and is still available for sale.

This is my very favorite of my black ornaments--stitched 13 years ago!

Which ornament is your favorite?

One of the very first Christmas decorations to be put up each year is this wonderful hand-carved wooden Nativity set. My parents bought it in Italy and gave it to me when I was first married--almost 50 years ago. I still have the handwritten note that mom included when she sent it to me and I get a bit teary-eyed each year when I read it as I carefully unwrap each character and animal and place them in the stable.

The workmanship in this wooden Nativity is gorgeous!  I bought the pretty red silk lamp shades this year on Amazon which really brighten the display in my kitchen.

Above the Nativity is the largest piece of cross stitch I've ever completed: "Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow." Oh, my--I still remember struggling to hold that giant piece of linen (since I don't use hoops or frames when I stitch). I did a block each month during 2010 on 32 ct. flax Belfast linen using most of the suggested DMC threads. If I was stitching it today, I would use 40 ct. because I just love stitching with one thread. I can hardly bear it if I have to use two threads these days! If you'd like to see a close-up of this huge piece, just click here

"Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow" gets a place of honor each year.

Gift-giving question? My little family of five has grown to ten now (with the addition of grandchildren and significant others) and I've been struggling with how to give gifts. The little grandsons are no problem at all. It's the adults--I just don't know what anyone wants (and it seems like none of us truly need anything). How do you handle gift-giving with adult children? Do you pick names, buy them each presents, give money, skip it altogether? I've come up with a plan for this year that I hope will be easier on me (since I am the prime gift buyer in the family :). I've asked each couple to give me three suggestions: 1) something they need for the home or garden, 2) a favorite restaurant so I can purchase a gift certificate, and 3) a membership or experience that we might give them (a zoo membership, tickets to a concert, etc.).  What do you think? Will this make my gift-giving easier? I'd seriously love to know what all of you with grown/married children do in your family! All suggestions are welcome :)

First snow of the season... There is something so magical about that first snowfall, isn't there? I still remember waking up as a little girl, raising the shades, and gasping with wonder as a fresh white landscape greeted me outside my bedroom window. And, as an adult, I feel the same way! We got about three or four inches last week and it was that beautiful kind of snow that sticks to every twig and tree branch. Sadly, most of it has melted away now even though we've had extremely cold temperatures in southwestern Pennsylvania. I do hope we have a white Christmas this year--fingers crossed!

Our first snowfall of the season in early December.

It's funny, I always think I don't have much to write about at the beginning of each blog post, and then they end up running on and on! I hope some of you are still with me at this point... What is on your agenda for the week ahead? I need to finish up some stitched gifts (including my youngest grandson's!), send out my cards (which I'm definitely cutting back on this year), and start my baking. It will be a busy, busy week, but I hope to just rest that final week before Christmas (famous last words!). Hope you each have a wonderful week ahead and will stop in for my annual "Parade of Ornaments" post next time. Take care now and thanks for popping in! Bye for now...

  1. Hi Carol, wonderful post and wonderful stitching again. Love the Plum Pudding mice. Christmas preparations are ready. Never in my life I am that early. Giving gifts for my children? Not easy, they are grown up and have their own life. But I always find things they like. Mostly certifacates. This year my son wishes a box full of cookies, made by mummy! Well, a little surprise will be in the box.
Hope your cold will be better soon. In spring I was infected by Covid and it took nearly 1/2 year to go.
Your pottery bar is amazing. Like it.
Have a wonderful time and all the best,
    Gabi

  2. Very pretty finishes
It's hard to pick a favorite, but I have to say for me, it's the Cardinal.
    The Nativity is beautiful.
Mom has been gone for 33 years, and I miss her everyday, but especially at Christmas when we always went to her house on Christmas day. Her favorite bird was the Cardinal.
I did no baking this year, nor a lot of decorations.
I have a 3rd ankle surgery coming up & have to prepare for that. UGH!
I like the idea of a membership for the adults.
We had 10" of snow last Saturday, & 4 more inches last night.
I think we are in for a big winter!
I am also loving feeding the birds, the Cardinals are so pretty sitting in the snow on the pine trees.
I can't wait for your ornament parade!
    Take care.

  3. Hi Carol- This is my first time commenting on your blog but I want you to know how much I look forward to reading your posts every month and seeing your beautiful stitching all these years! Almost everything you write about resonates with me right down to your cold symptoms- it does get discouraging when you don’t feel 100%! As far as gift giving we’ve picked names, just given to the children, and done a yankee swap. Now I just give wrapped gifts to the children and money to the adults but I love your idea for this year. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and look forward to the parade of ornaments!

  4. Love your post as usual, but especially seeing all your ornaments on your tree and each one individually....
Gift giving, we but for each grandchild and for adults we pull names. We have a $50/$60 limit. Each adult writes down 3-5 items they'd like and we go from there.
We all decided none of us need to spend a lot of $$ anymore. Christmas is an expensive time of year but we still like the gift giving.
Looking forward to your next post....Merry Christmas!

  5. Both your November and December ornaments are so pretty, Carol. I love seeing your cubby display with all black fabric ornaments featured. While I love them all, my favorite is the PS Santa in cubby 22. The family gift giving has dwindled since there are fewer adults. We give cash, gift certificates (for either Omaha Steaks or Wild Alaska) and of course, I stitch ornaments. I hope you rest so you can kick this illness to the curb. Thinking of you!

  6. I love seeing that cabinet full of Christmas decorations, Carol.
Against the black background, the colors stand out and shine even more.
I loved your Nativity scene and the beautiful story that accompanies it.
In just 14 days it will be Christmas Eve and the whole family will get together... I can't wait for the day to arrive.
The first batch of cinnamon cookies is already out here!!
    Hugs from Spain

  7. Another delightful post Carol! Gift giving for adults, for me, is quite difficult. I splurge here & there throughout the year as my daughter & family are here. At Christmas I have them provide a list of a few items, where possible, with links. It’s made my life so much easier, as I’m the gift buyer as well. Wishing you & yours a very Merry Christmas!

  8. Hi Carol, I so enjoy seeing your stitching and both new ornaments are so pretty. Your cubby is so nice with all the black ornaments in it and it’s hard to pick a favorite! I purchased the same cubby from Pottery Barn a couple of years ago, but it still isn’t on the wall! That should be a resolution for the new year! As far as gifts, I have the same problem with my 2 adult children and their spouses. We usually buy a membership for each family, give them cash and ask for suggestions from each so they have something to open. I’m still waiting for the suggestions from my son and daughter-in-law! Ugh! And, I have the same busy week ahead of me and even though I know it won’t happen, hope to have a few days to relax before Christmas! We need to take time to enjoy the season! I look forward to seeing your tree again. Take care, Cherie in WI

  9. I was just thinking about you, Carol and how it's almost time for your parade of ornaments! I love your cubby of stitched ornaments. They are all so beautiful but I really like the candy cane one. It's so nice to see how you change out your cubby for the seasons. Mine is filled with pin cushions in my sewing room. I also love getting my Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow out each year. I recently finished Farms at Hawk Run Hollow in memory of dad and it just makes me smile to see it. This is such a tough time of year for missing family members. I hope you feel better soon. It's tough not being well especially at this time of year. Thanks as always for your beautiful blog, Carol.

  10. Beautiful as always Carol! I love your cubbie and how you change it up! I kick myself for not purchasing it! Stitching on black really makes things pop! ❤️
Christmas can be stressful and mailing packages is so expensive these days.
We need to get back to simple.
Enjoy your family time, your decorations, food, cooking, etc. throughout the holidays! Time flies by so fast that we have to stop and enjoy the special moments! Merry Christmas!🎄🎁🙏🎅🏻🧑🏻‍🎄✝️

  11. Love your last stitched ornaments of the year, and your cubby display shelf is beautiful.
Christmas gifts this year have been very hard to buy. My middle daughter came up with a list when I had a moan lol, so she is sorted and it took away a lot of the stress for me, and she gets what she actually wanted. The other two will get the money to buy something for the house or split between each other, and perhaps a couple things to open. As you know I also have 4 grandchildren to buy for too, Christmas is an expensive time here! But this year even they have not really asked for anything so it's been hard. I really like your idea and I have suggested that next Christmas we all do a wish list and that we buy the grandkids an experience and just a couple things to open, it would certainly make my December easier, lol.

  12. Hi Again I so love your post. I really like your Pottery Barn cubby. I so love that you have your mom as the center of this beautiful display. Have a very Merry Christmas with your family.

PS I like the three questions that you asked your children. That will make shopping so much easier!!

  13. Hello Carol,
both new ornaments are wonderful. I love them.
My favourite in your shelf is the No. 15, the little Snwoman.
Your Shelf is like a Adventskalender. Your know, we are in German we open a little parcel every day.
It is the first Christmas without my mom an it is very hard and sad for me.
I ask my children what they wish for Christmas.
Have a nice time until next time, big Hugs, Manuela

  14. I love black ornaments! For gifts, my grandchildren now prefer money; I also include a small gift like socks. For adults, I often give books or small experiences like tickets to an exhibition. I think that with people who have everything, you should do as in Japan: in Japan, everyone has small houses and is minimalist. As a gift, it's essential to bring something small and edible, because it shouldn't stay, but disappear—so tea, jam, cookies.

  15. Hi Carol,
I love all of your ornaments but I have to say this year’s cardinal ornament is a new favorite! You are inspiring me to try stitching on black fabric again - I did it very poorly many years ago and gave up on it. Also, maybe 2026 is the year that I start stitching with one thread. I hope the smaller gauge fabric is not too much for my old eyes!!
Hope you get everything done according to plan this week so you can rest and enjoy all the holiday beauty. Thanks for sharing your lovely ornaments!!

  16. Hi Carol, I really admire your stitching on black. Your ornaments are lovely. With early Macular Degeneration, I am very lucky to be able to stitch on anything light- colored. I do love to stitch! Last year, my college-age granddaughter organized a Secret Santa gift exchange. It worked so well that she is organizing it for this year. Everyone has embraced it, including the grandkids. But to be fair, the youngest is a Sophomore in High School. Hope you’re feeling better soon. Merry Christmas!

  17. Carol, your final two ornaments for 2025 are beautiful, as usual...you know I love the stitching on black!
It is difficult to think of gifts for my adult children and getting to be so for the teenagers. I always ask for suggestions and try my best to fulfill them....as long as it's in my allocated budget.
We had two separate snows between last Friday and Monday; schools were closed for three days. It was a heavy snow too and clung to the trees...so pretty.
    Hope you're feeling better soon!

    Christel

  20. Would not think of black fabric for Christmas stitching but WOW. Love it! A few days of 40 next week may rid us of the snow and create filthy slush. Can't win.

  21. I think your idea of gifts for adults is perfect! Besides my daughter I have her SO and their roommate to buy gifts for. Each person is getting just 4 gifts and a stocking each filled with chocolate and small gift cards, ChapStick, a few lottery tickets. This year they're getting a mini loaf of Pumpkin Cranberry bread😂in their stocking! Ornaments 17 and 22 are my favorites. I too love your ornaments on black. I'm spending this weekend trying to get over this head cold that I've caught. Have a super weekend Carol, and that you're feeling better!

  22. Your ornaments are so pretty. I can't even imagine stitching on the black. I tried it once. It was just so hard to see. I have tried the white underneath...still hard and you have so many cute ones!!!
Our family is small so gifts are not too bad. My children did decide once they had kids they would only get gifts for the little ones, so my adult kids get gives for the little ones only. That was a big help for them. I do know on my mom's side of the family as we were growing up, they drew names and whittled that down for them.
