And once again, I've finished all twelve Christmas ornaments--one for each month of the year! I really wondered if I would get all twelve done this year as our fall was filled with such sadness and busyness and I just didn't find much stitching time. But, I did it! "Where there's a will, there's a way," as my dear mother liked to say... Would you like to see the final three for 2022?
For October, I chose a whimsical Santa by a new-to-me designer: My Fanny Design based in Italy. I chose to stitch him on black--over one on 28 ct. black Monaco with good old DMC threads. I did change a few colors to work better with the black and also changed his skin color to DMC 407. This is called "Santa Collection #1" and I love how it turned out! I finished him using some green checked fabric and added handmade cording, some frosty branches, and a trio of rusty jingle bells at the bottom.
How sweet is this green-robed Santa with his little snowmen buddies. Did you notice the tiniest one peeking out of his hat? |
I turned to Heart In Hand Needleart for this next finish called "Pocket Round--December 25th." I actually stitched this one four times and sent three of them out inserted in greeting cards to some international stitching friends! This cute design stitched up very quickly and was the perfect solution to creating an ornament in a very busy month. For this piece, I used 40 ct. vintage country mocha Newcastle linen with a mixture of overdyed threads and DMC. The finish was a simple one--just two rounds of different sizes surrounded by handmade cording. Quick and easy--and I thought the plaid bow was a perfect accent.

Now, for my December ornament, I had a bit of a dilemma! I stitched it twice using the same threads, but different fabrics. The end result was one on natural linen that was a bit more rustic and cute looking and one on gray linen that was more elegant and classic. I love how you can get such a different look just by changing up the fabric and the materials used in finishing.
Can you guess which one I ended up choosing to add to my tree this year? Well, before I reveal that, let me tell you a bit about the chart itself and the changes I made. This is from the Madame Chantilly Chart, "Celebrate Winter." It is just a small motif from the lower left portion of the chart (you can see the entire chart right here). I fell in love with the sweet bird perched on the tiny white house. So, I ended up stitching it twice! Now, on the original design, there were no snowflakes so I found charts online and added them to form a rounded finish. Here is a great collection of free snowflakes if you ever want to add some to a winter piece of your own: free snowflakes from Sue Hillis. I think they add so much to the final look!
Same chart, same thread, different fabrics. |
I stitched a gray version on 40 ct. Stormy Night Newcastle linen... To this one, I added white handmade cording, a gauzy white bow and just a bit of green holly and three white beads to accent it.
And I stitched a brown version on 40 ct. raw natural Newcastle linen... This finish got cording in the same taupe color as the little bird's body and a cute polka-dot bow.
Aren't they both adorable??? How to choose, how to choose? Well, since my October and November ornaments were on the whimsical side, I chose... the gray version for a bit of elegance! Which one would you have picked? I will use the other finish on the natural linen as a gift for someone special next year.
So, here's a question for my longtime readers... do you know what is coming up next now that I've finished all 12 ornaments? Why, it's my annual "Parade of Ornaments," of course! Hope you'll join me in my next post as all twelve 2022 ornaments are featured!
In the meantime, here's a wonderful dessert recipe for you to make--it serves a lot of folks and is so, so tasty. My middle son has requested this for his birthday ever since he was a little boy--I can't even tell you how many of these I've made each December 4th when his birthday rolls around. We celebrated this past Sunday (a week late this year) and everyone agreed that this "Giant Chocolate Eclair" was as yummy as ever. I actually cut the recipe in half as there were only four of us so it was more like a "Mid-sized Chocolate Eclair."
Here's the recipe for those of you who would like to give it a try. It takes a while because there are four layers: the pastry layer; the cream cheese/pudding layer; the Cool Whip layer, and the swirly chocolate layer. But it is well worth the effort! If you enjoy the taste of chocolate eclairs (and who doesn't?), you'll love this (you can click on the recipe below to enlarge it). If you have any questions, please let me know...
I stumbled upon this very cute freebie below from Yarnspirations.com that I thought you might like, too. I haven't stitched it yet, but wouldn't it make a great piece for January? Just click below the photo to download the chart. They have a number of other charming free cross stitch designs for various holidays, too. Just click here!

A shorter post today--isn't that a refreshing change from me?! I am hoping to get back to my Christmas cards and get started on my shopping this week. I've only bought presents for my grandson so far--I think not having my family here for Christmas this year has not been great for my motivation. I just keep procrastinating and procrastinating as I know I won't see anyone except my middle son and his girlfriend (who live nearby) until after the holiday. Anyway, I hope you're all staying healthy and enjoying your countdown to Christmas. Do take care, my friends! Thank you, as always, for visiting me today and for your very sweet comments and emails! Bye for now...
All 3 ornaments are so cute. I do love the December one. I have to pin that one for later. I think the snowflakes added a ton to that one. The recipe sounds yummy. I always love to see your parade of ornaments. I think this might be the first year I am finished with my shopping so early. It is definitely a first for me.
ReplyDeleteWow! You covered a lot in this “shorter” post. Definitely trying the cake! Love the ornaments- something about stitched snowflakes that I just love (even though I don’t stitch myself 😉).
ReplyDeleteYour trio of ornaments are so pretty, Carol. I like both versions of your December one and I think the snowflakes you added are the right touch. Looking forward to your parade of ornaments when you get it posted!
ReplyDeleteThe whimsical Santa is SO very cute! I love the December ornament. The bird is very cute! See you soon for the parade!! :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finishing another 12!! All three are delightful! I can see your grandson's little eyes lighting up when he sees the whimsical snowmen and Santa. My favorite of the little bird on the house would be the brown one. It would fit perfectly on my tree. Than you for the link for the snowflake ornament. You're right it would be perfect for January! Enjoy your holidays!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful stitching, as always. I really like the green-robed Santa with snowmen. The robins are cute and I prefer the beige-taupe one!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this period leading up to Christmas. The snowflake pattern is so pretty and I have to admit that I printed it. I wonder if I can tear myself away from my crochet to see if I remember how to do cross-stitch?!
Thank you for mentioning the 12 in 22 idea because I joined in and made 16! Just couldn't stop myself. Thank you for the choc eclair recipe, I just printed it out and will make for Christmas, I'm sure it's going to be a hit. As far as the 2 identical ornaments, both pretty, the tan one looked more rustic and the grey more elegant. LOVED them both actually. Merry Christmas to you and everyone who is following. Barb from Wolverine Lake Michigan
ReplyDeleteOMG ~ I'm not sure what I found cuter - the snowmen from My Fanny Design or what you did with the bird and the houses from Madame Chantilly! As always, I love seeing your annual ornaments as they inspire me to FFO my own. Wishing you a wonderful new year ahead with lots of joyful moments. ~ Chris
ReplyDeleteThe ornaments are wonderful, like everything you embroider, Carol!
ReplyDeleteI was impressed by that cake that I have to try!
Thank you so much for the recipe.
Kisses from Spain
Well done on completing all 12 ornaments this year despite the trials and tribulations life throws at us.
ReplyDeleteI chose the grey too although both are lovely.
I like the look of that dessert, desserts are the theme for my Advent Calendar this year or "Afters" as we call it in my part of England!
Carol dear ~ You are a treasure and an inspiration... Thank you for the
ReplyDeletesnowflake source...I spent some time as a result perusing the Sue Hillis
collection at 123... love her designs and train of thought... You have "needled" me into doing 12 ornaments in 2023. I am presently working on an
intricate sampler, but the ornaments might be a relaxing switch..hope I can
muster up your determination and endurance. A most blessed Christmastide to
you and followers.
Hi Carol! I like the bird ornament in taupe best. I think the added snowflakes really make it sweet! Thanks for the source. I know I’ll be adding snowflakes to my projects this winter! It looks like it’s going to be a long time indoors. We’re getting more snow Friday!
ReplyDeleteΚαι τα τρία στολίδια πολύ όμορφα !!
ReplyDeleteΧρόνια πολλά για τον γιό σας και χαρούμενες γιορτές !!!!
All three of your ornaments are wonderful, Carol! You have a real knack for finishing and changing things up! Ohhh, I love eclairs...hmmmmm!!! Can't wait for the ornament parade!!!
ReplyDeleteI love all the cross stitch designs and oh my goodness I will be making that yummy looking cake!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the snowflake freebie!
Thanks for the recipe Carol. Not sure if we are baking for Christmas other than nutrolls, but I will certainly consider this one for dessert!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the ornament parade!
Carol, this is wonderful reading.Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteHave wonderfull days
Eva from Czech Republic
All three ornies are: WONDERFUL! Can't wait for the parade!!!
ReplyDeleteThe cake looks yummy and I think .... I will make it!
The bird in taupe looks more winter like. Beige gives him a warmer look.
Have a wonderful time
You are such an inspiration Carol, I always like whatever you have stitched. Myself I prefer the brown ornament and I love that you can see such a thing in a much larger design, I'm afraid I lack your vision. Thank you for the link to the free snowflakes, they will certainly be handy next year for my black ornaments. I meant to ask you what fabric you use, I did a search for black 40 count linen but I can't find any, but I have plenty of 25 and 28 count evenweave that I can use instead. Hope you have a lovely Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHello Carol,
ReplyDeletedeine letzten Finishes für dieses Jahr sind alle drei richtig toll geworden.
Ich mag dein Dezember Finish. Freue mich schon auf deine 12 Ornament Parade und deinen geschmückten Weihnachtsbaum.
Genieße die Vorweihnachtszeit and a big Hugs, Manuela
Very cute ornaments.
ReplyDeleteLove the Madame Chantilly finish, I would pick the gray, so pretty!
Oh My! That Eclair dessert looks delicious thanks for the recipe.
That's a beautiful snowflake, thanks.
Marilyn
Merry Christmas carol: Happy Birthday to your son.
ReplyDeleteLovely ornaments and finishing are beautiful.
Thank-you for the links.
Catherine
Felicidades por terminar a tiempo tus doce adornos navideños!! Me gustan mucho, buena elección de diseños.
ReplyDeleteBesos
All three final pieces for 2022 are so beautiful! I confess I would have picked the brown one for December, as I tend to favour warm tones over cool, but the grey one looks very elegant and suits you well. :-)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finishing them in time despite 2022 being such a hectic year.
Hugs
The Santa on the black fabric is just darling! I love it and it is a new to me designer too!
ReplyDeleteI'm behind on shopping too. I don't think my husband and I will exchange gifts this year but will likely buy something "big" later. We will be a small group but one son will be home which will make it all the better. I'm already gearing the menu to things he particularly loves.
Congratulations on once again meeting your yearly goal!
Christel
Merry Christmas to you and yours I really enjoy reading your blog and seeing your wonderful stitching, very motivating.. Robyn Australia
ReplyDeleteHi Carol another beautiful post . I love to see your ornaments, so beautiful .
ReplyDeleteI am playing catch up.
Have a fun week, hugs June
Pozdrawiam
ReplyDeleteI'm always inspired by your beautiful and classy finishes. Your latest ornaments are lovely! You inspire all of us.
ReplyDeleteYour Santa with the snowmen looks really nice on the black fabric. Oh I see only now that you have already made the Karen motif into a great finsih for you. I've never made a round ornament, but I have an idea for your card.
ReplyDeletei love the little robin sitting there on the house looking at the snowflakes.
I hope you can enjoy the time until Christmas, don't stress too much.
Hugs, Martina
Carol, I am not a Facebook user, but I love the Renato Paroling freebee ornament you stitched. How might I access the pattern for it?
ReplyDeleteSuch great ornaments to round out the year Carol - I really like them all, especially with your beautiful finishing. The Eclair cake looks delicious, maybe something fun to try during my week of vacation!
ReplyDeleteWell done meeting your ornament goal yet again! They are all very cute. I think I'd have chosen the gray version of the little bird as well.
ReplyDeleteThat eclaire looks delicious! Maybe I will try it some time, thanks for sharing the recipe.
