V is for Valentine!

How can it be (almost) the middle of February already? I always look forward to February because it is such a short month and it leads into March which means... spring! I also love February because of the beautiful Valentine's Day designs that are out there. It means stitching with pinks and fuchsias and reds--not colors I use very often. I managed to stitch two Valentine's Day pieces this month (I try to add a couple new ones to my collection each year) and I'm so happy with how they both turned out.

First up, is a finish for me to keep--and there was a lot more stitching in it than I originally thought there would be. That basket! Anyway--isn't it pretty? This is "V is for Valentine" by Heartstring Samplery and I adore those colors together. The red thread is a gorgeous Gloriana silk called "Poinsettia." Other than changing the red and that pale pink color (I substituted Gentle Arts Cameo Pink), I used the suggested colors and stitched it on a beautiful 40 ct. linen called "Alabaster" (which is the palest of grays). I ordered the linen from this Etsy shop in Hungary: xjudesigns. Her linen is lovely and she offers free shipping when you spend over $50.00 (be sure to use the code mentioned on her Etsy page).

"V is For Valentine" finish

I added a bow made of a sheer black ribbon and then topped it with a smaller bow made of black and white gingham check. A sweet silver heart charm was then sewn to hand down from the bows. I thought the background fabric really picked up the colors of the stitching perfectly. Surrounding the circle is black pompom trim. The frame is one I've used before for a previous finish; will just pop in this piece each February and then replace it with what normally lives there. This was a thrifted frame that I chalk painted and distressed.

Love the pretty filigree heart

Did you notice that wonderful old key in the photo? That was given to me years ago by my mother-in-law and I so wish I knew the history behind it. I will  have my husband check with her, but at almost 94 years of age, I doubt she'll remember. Anyway, it is old and crusty and huge--almost 9 inches long (which gives you a better idea of the size of the finish). I love it so much and usually have it as part of a seasonal vignette on the table in my entryway.

The special antique key was given to me by my mother-in-law

My second finish may look familiar to you long time readers because it is one I've stitched before--in fact this is the third time! This Lizzie Kate design (called "Be Mine Valentine") was sent to a friend for her February birthday. I thought it would be perfect for someone with a birthday so close to Valentine's Day. I used 16 ct. natural Heatherfield (which has been discontinued) with most of the suggested overdyed threads. The pink gingham shown is the backing fabric and I used my handmade cording to surround it.

"Be Mine Valentine" for a friend

Here is a closeup of the double bow and the sweet silver-toned key charm. I'm happy to say my friend loves her birthday gift!

Love the effect of the double ribbon, pearl topped pin, and key charm!

Behind the scenes, I'm working on a very special Christmas themed piece. Remember I told you I planned on working on some larger Christmas pieces this year? Well, I spent my Christmas gift certificate at 123 Stitch last week and these goodies just arrived! I'm thinking about stitching the "Christmas Rules" in the upper left for my little grandson at some point in the next year or two. But, I wonder which one I should start for myself? Which would you pick?

I foresee lots of Christmas stitching in my future!

Giveaway winner... Oh, how I loved reading about your early jobs in my last post in the "Getting To Know You" section! Thank you so much for joining in--it's fun to learn a bit more about our fellow stitchers, don't you think? I had quite a few entries for the pretty "Thistles and Flowers" chart and the winner's name pulled from the hat was...

CLARE (in England)

Congratulations, Clare! I hope you love stitching this sweet design. Please email me with your mailing address and I will get it off to you as soon as possible. Thank you to all who entered--and please keep an eye on this space for future giveaways.

Blog book... As many of you know, I have my blog put into book form using blog2print.com. I wait until I have two years worth of posts to send in for each book and my latest one covers the years 2019 and 2020. It's a big one--the biggest one yet at 437 pages! Can you imagine?! The good thing is that blog2print offers discount codes fairly regularly and I got this book for 45% off the normal price. I'm very pleased with the quality of the book--my only complaint (as usual) is that the captions don't end up centered under the photos. But, I can live with that!

I chose "Winter's Wisdom" for the cover of my latest blog book

And the back of the book my finish of the "Birds of a Feather" sampler by With Thy Needle and Thread

I love having an actual book that I wrote filled with photos of my stitching, travels, holidays, family memories, and baking. This 2019-2020 book is especially meaningful because it contains photos from...

... our special anniversary river boat cruise down the Danube in 2019

...photos of every single piece I stitched in 2019 and 2020

...recollections of some of my life's biggest milestones including the birth of my first grandchild in July 2020 and the death of my dear mother just 16 days later. The Covid pandemic also haunts nearly every post of 2020.

Here is the stack of all six books! I can hardly believe I wrote every single word in each book and took most of the photos. My 2019/2020 book is dedicated to my mother and my little grandson.

That's a heavy stack of "Stitching Dreams" from 2009-2020!

It's still very wintry here... haven't seen the grass since early January. I took this photo the other morning as the sun was peeking up over the hill. Everything looked so very calm and tranquil. The ice storm we got left everything shimmering--like a fairyland! Of course, the ice caused some branches to fall, including a large one in our pond. But, we were lucky--we didn't lose power at all. How did you all fare in that latest winter cross-country storm?

A sparkly February morning view from my bathroom window

I'll leave you with this little vignette of a few of my Valentine's finishes. I actually didn't put all of my Valentine's stitching out on display this year for some reason. The snowmen in the Pottery Barn cubby refused to yield their spaces so I simply left them there for the month of February. I may need to get tough with them in March, though--ha ha! I did put together this little display shown below  containing my newest Valentine's finish along with three little gingham hearts that I made last week.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope each of you has a lovely Valentine's Day... Nothing special is planned here although I will probably make a tasty dessert. How about your plans? Thank you so much for stopping by today--it's always wonderful to hear from you and see some new stitchers' names among the comments. Welcome to all of my new followers--I'm so glad you are here! Take care, my friends! Bye for now...

  1. Your Valentine finish is beautiful, as is your gift to a friend.
Makes me want to pull mine out & stitch it!
I love your finishes, they aren't overdone, just the right amount of trims, and I love your perfect cording!
    Love that key!
I think you should stitch peace on Earth, it's such a pretty design.
Those blog books are amazing & hold great memories.
We haven't had much snow here in WI, but very cold temps this year.
We just had new windows put in on 2 warmer days, so now we are all set for more cold weather.

  3. Carol, I stitched the V is for Valentine for myself and it is such a pretty stitch, your vignette for Valentines day is so pretty. Your gift to your friend is darling! Love that key!!! I hope your MIL remembers how she obtained it. How wonderful that you added another book to your collection! Great new patterns but I personally would stitch Christmas Rose first! I love that one!! Enjoy the reprieve of the warmer weather!!

  4. What a pretty Valentine finish Carol! The gift for your friend is very sweet and I love it! My, what a large stack of blogging books you have now! :) Oh it is still very wintry here.

  5. What a great way to start my day - reading this post. Carol, I love the idea of your books; what wonderful keepsakes. I heard on a podcast yesterday where someone talked about treasuring something that has her mother's handwriting on it. Both of you have given me something to think about.

Your purchase from 123stitch looks like a lot of fun. I think I'd have trouble picking the first project as well. I'm adding a name of each grandchild to the back of the Christmas tree ornaments I've stitched. I hope one day they will treasure something from Gramma Mary.

  6. Love, LOVE your V is for Valentine finish, Carol! And your new Valentine vignette! The small you stitched for your friend's birthday is darling. What a wonderful assortment of charts you added! Most of the snow here is gone (except for random spots in the shaded areas and the piles in parking lots). We have had warmer than normal temps since Wednesday. Happy Friday and have a relaxing weekend!

  8. Your little display is just so pretty with all those sweet stitches. I love love V is for Valentine. I may have to put that one on my wish list. You are going to have fun with all those samplers: just don't do like me and get too many going at one time. I am going to finish all of my in '22 and never do this again. I feel so scattered with those 4 big ones going. That is just not a good fit for me. When I finish all my videos which is almost done (I am sending my last batch this month) I am going to start on my blog books.

  9. I love your finish on V is for Valentine! It highlights your stitching without overwhelming it and looks great in your display. I also noticed the white drawn thread piece underneath the key in one photo. That is a stitch I am hoping to try at some point this year. Beautiful stitching all around!

  10. Oh Carol, thank you so much for your ideas and inspiration! I love the ribbons and how you put them together. I am going to have to try that:) Your Heartstring valentine is beautiful, and I just love your red/white gingham hearts. Your books are amazing, I have read other blogs, that lost all of their past blogs d/t computer changes. Have a wonderful Valentine's Day my friend:)

  11. V is for Valentine darling! So sweet. You find the best cross stitch patterns and finish them nicely coordinated. February is one of my favorite months. The days are noticeably getting longer and when the winter sun is out, it shines nicely in the windows. For some reason, their are brilliant sunrises in my area in the month of February. Doing fine this winter staying busy doing inside chores. A blog book is a neat idea. Like a diary. Happy Valentine’s Day!

  12. Does everyone wish they lived around the corner from Carol? What fun... especially the
creative way you finish your projects...Just watching would be a tutorial... What a
legacy of your blogs and stitchery you have collected for your loved ones. I was not
aware of the firm that facilitates the books, but have posted them for future reference. Many thanks, Carol, for passing it forward. Have a relaxing weekend.

  14. I love this pattern, although I'm not decorating here for Valentine's Day, I think it's beautiful. I am very enthusiastic about your finsih, you can tell that you have a lot of practice in it. The gift for your friend was also great, I think the small key at the top as a decoration is cute.

  18. You have a real talent for finishing your work. Each piece is so lovely. It would be interesting to know how you make your own cording. Do you have a post about it. Fabulous idea about your books.

  19. I have the V is for Valentine pattern in my stash. I love your finishing job. Beautiful!

I actually started another Heartstring Samplery Valentine piece at the beginning of the month. My Funny Valentine. My goal is to have it ready to display for Valentine’s Day 2023.

  20. Seeing your blog has just reminded me that I forgot to stitch something for Valentine’s Day this year! Last year I did the top of the Lizzie Kate design, just Be Mine and the heart, I made it into a card for my husband.
How wonderful to have your blog books, what absolute treasures to read and keep.

  23. All the Valentine pieces are lovely. I think Valentine's Day comes just when we need some color. Compared to some other holidays, I do very little decorating. But it is fun to add a bit of color. All the Christmas designs are good, just see which one speaks to you!!

  24. Beautiful Valentine's Day stitching. I like the way you finish of your work with the cord around and pretty bows and little charms. I like the last photo with the gingham hearts!

It's a lovely thought that spring is on the way and the little flowers are about to bring us joy! I've already seen snowdrops and primroses!

    Have a beautiful week!

  28. I’m a little slow to get to wishing you Happy Valentine’s Day but I do hope you had a fun, happy day to celebrate. Your “V is for Valentine” stitched piece is just beautiful and perfect for celebrating, and your little collection at the end of your posting is very special, too. (I chuckled when I read that all the snowmen in your PB cubby refused to leave. Who knew they could be so stubborn?)
I am most impressed with your Blog Books, too. That seems like a really wonderful idea to have a printed book (just in case) of all your memories to treasure. I can imagine that future members of your family will love having the opportunity to read about all of your stitching projects, your family adventures, your travels - they will love it! All your efforts will be so appreciated.
Do you get to see Mister B. soon?

  31. And suddenly it’s now the first of March - boy is this year starting quickly! Love your new stitches and lovely finishing as always. Christmas Rules will be great for your son - and I’d start the piece on the left of your picture (I can’t recall the name). How great to have your blog printed out - a wonderful way to be able to look back and I bet your grandson will enjoy reading it in the years ahead.

  35. I can't believe I didn't comment on this beautiful post! The problem is I read people's blogs on my phone but can't comment from my phone so I have to remember to come back and comment on my computer! But your finish of the V for Valentine is the nicest finish of this chart I have ever seen. It makes me want to stitch it! Your whole display is so festive and pretty. What a great keepsake of having your blog published as a book. That's really the way to do it. It will never be lost and you and your loved ones have all those memories to go over at your fingertips. It's a legacy!

  36. That Valentine with the basket is very cute! I always underestimate how long stitching will take too! It looks like such a small area until you start stitching it then it is like That is very cool about your books. You and your family will be able to reminisce about things you guys have done. I am looking forward to seeing which chart you picked!
