Three Birds, Two Bunnies, and One Decadent Chocolate Cake!

Mid-April already??? I can hardly believe it! This is the time of year I would always look forward to the most--the end of tax season and the return of normal work hours for my husband. The boys and I rarely saw him from January 2nd to April 15th when he worked as a tax accountant/CPA. He worked every single day of the week, often not getting home until past our bedtime. I honestly felt like a single mother for those 3 1/2 months every year. Thankfully, he changed jobs about 20 years ago and life has been much better. But, still, even after all these years, mid-April is a time I associate with good things--warmer weather, blooming trees and flowers, singing birds, and digging in the soil (well, not that one so much--I am not a gardener anymore due to the deer who devour things as quickly as we plant them!). It's just such a happy month, don't you think?

I have two finishes to share with you today--one large and one small. The larger piece is one you last saw in September of 2016. But, I actually started it over five years ago! (This is why I tend to stitch one piece at a time--if I put it down for any length of time, it is a true struggle to go back to it). The first time I put it in "time out" was because I didn't know what to do about the "J" that was missing from the alphabet. Yes, I know many older samplers don't include the "J" or the "V," but, that bothers me... So I put it away in order to "think" about what I wanted to do. In 2016, I picked it up and decided to just leave it as charted--no "J." But, then I ran out of Weeks Dye Works "Kudzu!" I mean there is a lot of kudzu in this piece--everything green is kudzu... Just look at all of the leaves, grass, and stems! The replacement Kudzu arrived and I stitched all the way down to the house. And then I put it away again--I was so very tired of stitching all that green! Fast forward to earlier this month and I came across it again and literally said--out loud--"Carol, just get it done!" My husband was out of town so I "stitched like it was my job" and, voilà--here it is! Don't you love it?

"Birds Of a Feather" is finally finished!

"Birds Of a Feather" is a With Thy Needle and Thread design stitched on 40 ct. flax Newcastle linen with most of the suggested overdyed colors. I did change the birds to a bluer blue, but I lost the tag that stated the exact shade and have no idea what the lighter color is! The darker color on the birds is GAST "Dungarees." Don't you love the border--just look at the reds in those pretty tulips? I photographed it next to my husband's grandfather's old pocket watch and one of my grandmother's hankies. The sampler reminds me of a simpler life in days gone by... just like the watch and the hankie...

I want to live in that little yellow house on top of a hill!

Green, green, and more green!

Now, to get it framed!

Bunny stitching... It wouldn't be Easter if I didn't create at least one small bunny pillow to add to my collection, would it? This is from a 1994 design by Patrick's Woods called "The Heart's Chase" which I just happened to see on eBay last year. I don't think I've ever seen this design stitched up before, have you? It really could be either an Easter piece of a Valentine's design.

"The Heart's Chase" finish

The pillow was stitched on 40 ct. flax Newcastle with a combination of overdyed threads and DMC. I changed the large heart color to black (from a charted dark navy blue). If you look closely, you'll notice some specialty stitches... in fact the "stairs" that the bunny on the right is running up are made of satin stitches. Don't they resemble tiny hearts?  To finish this off into a pillow, I used a tiny strip of pink fabric next to a black and white gingham along with some mini-ric rac, a stack of buttons, and some of my handmade cording--I think it gives the whole piece a cheerful, fun look.

Another pink and black bunny pillow for my collection

You don't generally think of pink and black being Easter colors, do you? But, I've found myself returning to that color scheme quite often over the past years. Just look at all the pink and black creations I've made in the photo below! Do you like my bunny chair? Oh, I absolutely fell in love with it when I spotted it at a thrift store in Florida last year. My husband was not impressed--it is very "chippy" and aged looking and I know he wondered what I saw in it. He asked me just how I intended to get that home on the airplane and I told him I'd find a way. I carefully padded it with plastic bags and brought it home in my little carry-on duffel bag. I was so scared it would fall apart, but it arrived in great shape and is now a treasured part of my Easter decorating. Not bad for $5.00, eh? If you'd like to know more about the other bunny finishes in this photo, just click on the name of each one and you can read the description of my finishes: black bunny pouch, two bunnies in black oval, bunny and pink house.

I tend to group my bunnies into groups of similar colors--these are just a few members of the pink group!

More thrifting goodies... I love visiting thrift shops, although I don't go as often as I'd like. I did stop in at my local Goodwill this week and came away with some treasures including that pale pink ceramic basket on the right in the photo above for a mere 98 cents. I spotted the adorable green bunny creamer below and had to have it even though, at $7.99, it was more than I wanted to spend. Yes, I'm very frugal!!

My new thrifted bunny creamer

Fresh daffodils from my yard that the deer actually didn't devour this year!

I also came home with a new pair of framed 15" x 17" floral prints for my pale yellow sunroom (the room where I take the majority of my photos because the natural light is so wonderful). Aren't these pretty--can't wait to get them hung up. They are double matted and in absolutely pristine condition... And guess how much they were? Each one was only $3.98! Thrift stores offer such a great way for you to find something to change up the look of your room at very little cost.

Two new floral prints from the thrift store

A delicious dessert... Before I get to the winner of the cording giveaway, I'd like to share this decadent Flourless Chocolate Cake recipe with you. My oldest son was visiting from California last month and I made this for his birthday--doesn't it look fancy? Well, let me tell you, this was one of the easiest desserts I've ever made! You can find the cake recipe right here (it is just a single layer) and the chocolate glaze recipe here. I only made half of the glaze and it was plenty. For both the cake and the glaze, I used Ghirardelli's Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Bars. For the pretty effect on top, I simply sifted powdered sugar over a paper doily placed on top of the glaze after it had dried and then lifted the doily straight up. This honestly tasted as good as it looked--just like an expensive restaurant dessert! Give it a try on your next special occasion...

Flourless Chocolate Cake--oh, my!!

Giveaway winner... I was so touched by all of your kind comments on my previous post--I'm very glad my tutorial on how I attach my cording was helpful. Have any of you tried it yet? I had 32 entries for my eight pieces of cording and the name pulled from the proverbial hat was... drumroll please:

Shelly (An Arizona Stitcher) is the giveaway winner!

Congratulations to Shelly! Please send me an email with your mailing address and I will get these pretty pastel pieces to you pronto. This was a fun giveaway for me to host as I truly love making cording. I'm thinking I'll do another giveaway for patriotic colored cording in a month or two so keep on reading! Thank you to all who entered--I mean it when I say I was very touched by your compliments and comments... I am way behind on emails so I will do my best to catch up with you soon. And please remember, if you have a question, make sure to include your email so I can answer it!

Our Easter will be quiet with just our middle son and his girlfriend here for dinner. I so miss those wonderful family Easter dinners that my mom used to prepare for us--she always made things so very special at holiday time. I don't think you appreciate how hard a mother works at holiday time until you are on your own and doing all those things yourself. So, thank you, mom--I love you so...  Hope you each have a blessed Easter weekend with family, friends, and lots of little chocolate bunnies. Until next time, happy stitching, my friends! Bye for now...

Wishing all of my friends here at Stitching Dreams a very blessed Easter weekend!

  2. Oh Carol, as always so many things to comment on today. This is just a wonderful post. Your thoughts on April drew me to the first time I read a Gladys Taber book. It was one of those that her daughter compiled of her articles. She felt the new year should begin with April because of its beauty. I just love walking around looking at the blooming flowers and the fresh feel. I kind of agree with her. I thought it was just the school teacher in my that hated the missing letter. The sampler turned out so pretty!!! And that little bunny chair would have caught my eye too. IT is perfect for your little pieces. I mean I am in love with that little vignette. Mother stops weekly at our little Goodwill between our houses. I love to look also. I think so much of what you see today in the stores doesn't have the character of days gone by, so I love to look for treasures like that. I found a wonderful double matted frame with a simple cross stitch in it one day. I bought it for the frame but am having trouble pulling someone's stitching out of it. We will see. Anyway the bunny creamer is adorable too. And that cake looks wonderful. I am going to remember it and save for later. Happy Easter. I know what you mean about not realizing how hard the work to make all those special occasions special until you did them yourself. I do love doing them, but I am usually worn out later. I treasure every moment I get with the kids.

  3. Birds of a Feather is lovely Carol. It does drive me wild when letters are missing from samplers!!! The Heart's Chase is perfectly adorable! Oh your pink group is very well liked by me!! Well done on the pink basket find at Goodwill! I love it! And that sweet, little bunny chair. I can see why you could not leave it behind. ;) Thank you for the links to the Flourless Chocolate cake and the glaze. I am always looking for new, GOOD recipes to try out on my bunch. :D Happy, Blessed Easter to you!

  4. Such beautiful stitching, as always! I absolutely love The Heart's Chase design and the way you have finished it to bring out the pink! What a sweet still life you've arrange with lovely Easter subjects!
The cake looks beautiful, especially with the clever doily design! Your son must have been thrilled! Those flourless cakes are the best!

    Happy Easter to you, Carol!

  6. Carol, what a delightful post to read this AM with my coffee! I love your bunny display (great find on the chair) along with the newest addition of the Patrick Woods' piece. So adorable! Your large sampler looks fabulous; good for you on getting it finished. You have come home with some excellent finds from thrifting. That little green bunny creamer is darling and I love it with the daffodils. Oh my goodness, that cake looks fabulous. Wishing you a blessed spring and Easter!

  7. Good Morning, Carol!
This is probably the first time I've commented on your blog, but I "lurk" on a regular basis!!!! I find your finish of The Heart's Chase soooo delicious...you have such an eye for color and just the right combinations for finishing. The rabbit chair is precious...I could not have passed that up either...I chuckle at your husband's questioning HOW you would get it home...my dear husband has often voiced this...I succeed each time!!!
I am curious...what specialty stitch was used on the center of the large flower?
Enjoy all the blessing Easter brings...
    Regards,
    Patricia

  8. Dear Carol,
your new embroidery is so delicate and fine, also very beautiful in colour, congratulations to this wonderful finishing.
I also like your Easter embroidery very much, you have a knack for ornaments. (knack .... is it rihgt?) And also for decorations, the jug is a piece of jewellery
Thank you for the recipe, happy Easter to you and your family, Jutta

  9. !!!!!!!oh my gosh, Carol! It's my lucky day today! Thanks so much. I will email you with my mailing address.

Sorry about the deer eating your flowers. People in my neck of the woods plant stuff that deer don't like and I forget what kind of flowers they are. They use fences too but it's nothing like planting flowers around the yard. I think they give up too. I like your spring-y and Easter creations on black fabric, the color just pops. Oh my stars, I am going to have so much fun with your cording!! Anyway, I think the bunny creamer was too cute to pass up and it looks gorgeous with flowers. Funny story about the bunny chair too! That chocolate cake, yum! Your blog posts are always filled with scrumptious items, from stitching to baked goods. Have a wonderful Thursday, Carol!

  10. I love your thrift store finds! That bunny chair is so cute.
Congrats on your beautiful finishes. I'm hoping to get some stitching time in during my vacation to VA next week.

Happy Easter! Thank you for sharing a piece of your world with us.

  12. Carol, Well, I want to know if your husband is impressed with your 5$ chair now because I sure am!! It's just perfect for your vignette of all your sweet bunnies!! I love your pink and black color combos too.
I just love everything Brenda designs and this stitch is just gorgeous. I'm so glad you got it done. I didn't know that about the missing letters, I wonder why? I am stitching Blessings be thine by Blackbird and instead of having a Q in the alphabet there was a backwards P, of course I had to change it to a Q!!
Your world play monthly vignette is adorable and what great finds you found at goodwill!! I love going to thrift stores but I have yet to find anything at a goodwill. I prefer rummage sales where people make donations, I always do better there.
YOur Hearts chase is precious and lovely finishing as always!!
Well, I already printed off your cake recipe, I often sprinkle confections sugar over doileys also, So pretty and so easy!!
Congrats to Shelly on her win of the cording!!

Have a Blessed Easter!!! Hugs, Mary

  18. Love the bunny backed chair..one person's trash truly can be another person's treasure. I also love the white, black and pink bunny heart design. We got about 3 to 4 inches of snow last weekend also and now it's cold and rainy. Spring and Winter are definitely fighting for dominance. Have a great weekend.

  19. Carol, another fabulous post with so many goodies! I'm so glad you finished the sampler...I love it and I'm sure you do too now that it's complete....j...or not! Your Hearts Chase is precious; it must be one of Sherr's first designs...I've never seen it before. I love the pink/black colors--they are so cute and fun!!! Your cake recipe sounds delish and I printed it out to try. Wishing you a happy Easter weekend with your family.

  20. Carol I love your large sampler by WTNT. Aren't you glad you didn't give up on that one? It came out so lovely. And your bunny stitch which we all look forward to is darling. I love black and pink together and your grouping is perfect.

Oh yes I do anything I can to get something I like back home. When we went to France I put one of my husband's big canvas military bags in my suitcase. It packed easily and on the way home I could fill it to my heart's content with goodies I found. I love your sweet bunny chair...it was a great find.

I love the green bunny majolica pitcher. I have alot of it that I found in Homegoods several years ago. The bunny is adorable.

I like anything chocolate and that cake looks beyond delicious. It will just be the two of us this Easter but we are leaving the beginning of May for Texas to visit with our only son and I can't wait. I wish you and your family a very happy and blessed Easter. RJ@stitchingfriendsforever

  21. Both of your stitching pieces are beautiful. I love the bluebirds. They nest every year in my yard and I look forward to their return. Your Goodwill “finds” are lovely. I especially like the green bunny pitcher. I also miss holidays with my mom and grandma. I never realized how hard they worked until I had to do holidays. It’s a lot. When my kids and nieces and nephews were young we would have a huge Easter egg hunt. It was so much fun. We’re supposed to have a beautiful weekend and i’m looking forward to hanging laundry on the clothesline. Happy Easter to you. I really enjoy your blog.

  22. Hi Carol,
Your sampler looks great, it fits all so well together. The flowers and the birds have a great color.
I also like the two rabbits, they look like they are playing happily over the meadow or the hill.
I'm always excited about your finishes. You simply combine the fabrics, buttons and cords ingeniously.
This Stuhi is a small, fine baby, he looks pretty and is the perfect decoration for your Easter pillows.
Your chocolate cake looks really delicious, very finely decorated.
Also I love it when the family comes together, you eat together, spend time. The years go by too fast and everyone has their own family. Then it will be harder and harder to spend time together.
I wish you a wonderful Easter, big Hugs, Martina

  23. Well done on finishing your large cross stitch piece. I struggle with bigger projects because I just get bored and then they go on and on forever with only occasional sessions working on them. Some projects have taken well over a decade to finish. x

  24. Birds of a Feather turned out so pretty.
Yes, sometimes we get bored of the same color & have to put it away for awhile.
I've always loved Patrick's Woods designs, but have never seen this one, it's very unique, and so pretty.
    Your finish is wonderful.
Your thrift store treasures are nice, gotta love that Bunny creamer!
And that Cake! Thanks for the link.
I miss Holidays with Mom also.
At Christmas, she would have on her pretty skirt & vest with her Christmas apron over it, Christmas earrings, and A beautiful Christmas tree platter just loaded with homemade cookies.
She said they weren't fancy cookies, but they were to us!
Oh, how I miss that, but I do have the tree platter to remind me.
    Have a wonderful Easter.

  27. Hi Carol - I just had to leave you a Comment and tell you how much I love reading your blog post from yesterday. “Birds of a Feather” and “The Hearts Chase” are just beautiful. Your work and creativity are so wonderful! I think you are an inspiration to all of us.

That little bunny chair you “rescued” from the Florida thrift store is adorable and just perfect for Easter decorations - so fun and festive. I’ll bet your husband is pretty impressed, too. The other items you found at Goodwill are really great finds too!

Thank you, too, for sharing the cake & icing recipes. I had no idea that it was a cake & frosting when I first caught a glimpse of the picture but as I read your post, I was so impressed. A one layer cake seems like a really good idea when there’s just two of us and this one looks soooo delicious! (Chocolate is a favorite flavor for me!!). I’m going to have to give this recipe a try.

Well, I hope you have a very happy Easter celebration (and I’m sure a delicious dinner with your family). Enjoy! and thank you for sharing your very special blog and stitching with us.

Happy Easter and Happy Spring to you!!

    XOXO. Barb R.

  28. Congrats on finishing the Birds of a feather piece, I like the pretty border and also the bunny pillow you stitched. You always do such pretty finishes as I see the black gingham is perfect and makes me realize that I don´t experiment enough with colours. Great thrifty buys and that cake is just too much. Happy Easter Carol.

Lovely two photos. Very yummy dessert. Congrats Shelly! Happy Easter.

  33. All of your beautiful spring stitching looks wonderful! Yes,this is a special time of year. I love what Martin Luther said about this time of year. "Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection not only in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time." That is one of my favorite quotes from Martin Luther. All the blessing of Easter to you and your family, Carol!

Hi Carol! So fun to see all of your Easter goodies. The chair is a treasure and that bunny creamer with the daffodils makes such a great spring display! I often wonder what the history of some of the pieces are. Wouldn't it be great if they could tell us where they've been? I bet that bunny chair has not been on a plane before :) The cake looks delicious and almost too pretty to eat. I am surprised that the deer eat your daffodils. Here it is about the only bulb that they don't eat. Tulips and pansies are their favourite spring food. Then hostas and hydrangeas... It is discouraging, I know, and expensive. I am glad you got to keep some daffodils this year. I always feel sorry for accountants at this time of year. Our taxes in Canada are due at the end of April and I always try to get the paperwork in early so they have lots of time to work on it. Glad your husband doesn't have to do that any more! Thanks for the great visit, Carol. Happy spring!

  37. Great thrift shop finds! I never find anything when I visit thrift stores. That flourless chocolate cake recipe looks so easy. Love the pink and black spring/Easter color theme. It's fun to change to different or unexpected colors. This year I made a turquoise and pink wreath for Valentine's Day. Not traditional colors for that holiday, but I love it.

  39. Another beautiful post, Carol! Your Easter finishes are really pretty. Love the pink/black combination. I also love the effect of green (the green that is currently the background of your blog) and black together. That bunny chair is darling. What a find! I am so happy you were able to bring it home.

That cake looks a...MA....zing! I will download the recipes to my Paprika recipe manager app as soon as I'm finished commenting. :-)

I hope you had a lovely Easter. My husband and son were working at the family ranch over the weekend, but my mom came to visit and we had a nice "girls' weekend" together. A couple of dinners out, a birthday celebration for my niece, and a pajama day. Perfect weekend.

I did stitch the Birds Of A Feather, it is one of my favorite designs, I have it hanging in my entry way.
I love thrifting, we live in a small town we have a free store that gets lots of fun stuff and a thrift store in the next town that has so many goodies, I love it.
Your black and pink are perfect together, I love the contrast they have together.

  44. Hope you had a nice, if quieter than usual, Easter. Ours was busy but very fun with lots of family in town. Congrats on both of your stitching finishes this month - I really like all your pink and black stitching. And I love how the daffodils look in that little creamer - how sweet! Hope the second half of April hasn’t gone as quickly for you as it has for me!

  45. The missing letters bother me too and I would probably try to fill them into the chart if I could. However your Sampler is beautiful! I really love all the bunny stitching! The good will finds are amazing and I too am frugal shopping there. I try to go on the senior discount days so I can get a little more of a bargain ;)

  47. Hi Carol! Your Goodwill creamer is fantastic! I love it! The color, the rabbits, all of it. Of course you have displayed it beautifully! The chocolate cake looks like yum on a plate! I have always loved the Birds of a Feather mystery sampler. I should have bought all three charts long ago. It hits all my sweet spots. I’ve been gardening less the last few years too but not because of deer. It takes away from my precious stitching time! 😂 And you were lamenting that it is mid April already and I am commenting on May 3rd. Time flies! Happy May, my friend!
