Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow Is...

FINISHED!! Could you hear my cries of joy all over the eastern U.S.? With one day to spare, I finally put the last stitch into this mammoth piece earlier today. I can't believe that after spending much of my 2010 stitching time on this piece, it is finally complete... Ahhh--I feel like I can breathe again!

The 11th block really stretched my patience to its limits and there were days that I honestly didn't think I would finish before year's end. (As you can see, I put the date "2011" on the ship rather than stitching the charted date of 1802.) In spite of the stress that this block caused, it is actually one of my favorites. Overall, though, I would have to say that the block with the Christmas tree farm is the one I like the best. How about you?

The 12th block stitched up very quickly and, after much debate, I decided to add my own name and the current year. The general consensus among my stitching friends seemed to be that, since this isn't a true reproduction sampler, but one from the wonderfully creative imagination of Kathy Barrick, it is fine to substitute the actual stitcher's name. I changed the body color of the little spirit/angel/cherub to a peachier shade (DMC 950) since the charted color just didn't show up on my flax-colored Belfast linen.

I really want to thank you all for following along on this project with me throughout 2010--your support and encouragement helped more than you know. Now, I need some advice...I've never taken a piece to be framed and wonder how you handle a large piece like this. Do you press it at home and roll it up to take it in to the framer? Are there any questions, requests, etc. I should ask about? Glass or no glass? I'm not using a mat... Honestly, any advice you can offer would help me so much. I am a total novice at professional framing having always done smaller pieces myself...

Well, I guess you would like to see the entire piece? May I present my finished Christmas at Hawk Run Hollow...

Now, I have a conundrum--what do I stitch next? I'm actually going to have to "think" about that in 2011, aren't I? I've been going through my stash and have narrowed my first start for the new year down to a few pieces that have really been calling my name, but I still have to make a final decision. I've decided that 2011 will be a "Stitching From Stash" year. I have so many beautiful charts that just keep getting set aside in order to stitch newly purchased charts, don't you? So, I decided to work on bringing some of "my old friends" to life in 2011.

The other thing I know for sure is that I will continue my "ornament a month" stitching in the coming year and I'm so excited that a few of my online stitching friends will be joining in on the fun. I am truly appreciative of everyone's comments on my last post about the ornaments and my Christmas tree--thank you, thank you! I'll have to admit, I spent a fair amount of time standing in front of my tree this past week just admiring the little beauties. They really make me smile and I almost hate to put them away for another year... Here is a photo collage of our Christmas morning:

Christmas Morning 2010

I want to thank my friend, Cathey (aka Pumpkin) for sending me a cute addition to my collection of ornament charts. She surprised me with this chart from Milady's Needle called "Up On the House Top" along with a beautiful Christmas card (featuring her own amazing photography) last week. I love it, my friend, and you know that ornament charts are a perfect gift for me. Thank you so much, Cathey. My oldest son has been working up in Canada lately and he always says how nice and thoughtful the Canadian residents are--I told him I already knew that from my Canadian blogging friends like Cathey!

And from Gracie, I won a very special giveaway. She was generously giving away three of the DMC "Stitch Pink" Needlework Accessory Kits and I was lucky enough to win one. Not only did she include the kit (which contains the prettiest pink scissors, pink bobbins, and a pink needle threader), she also gifted me with some pretty pink ribbon fabric, pink variegated floss, pink "love" mints, and a tiny silver charm for breast cancer awareness. Thank you so much, Gracie. These gifts will all come in very handy when I make another ornament for The Pumpkin Patch & Co. Breast Fund next year. Cathey organized a group of 17 of us to stitch ornaments that were auctioned off in November to raise funds for breast cancer research. Our little group ended up raising $875! Just think how much money we could raise if more of us donated an ornament. Cathey/Pumpkin will be continuing the group next year so keep checking her blog if you would like to contribute an ornament for this wonderful cause in 2011...

I'm going to be taking a bit of a blogging break for a while. My youngest son and I are headed down to sunny and warm (please let it be sunny and warm, please let it be sunny and warm!) Florida to visit my parents next week. I should be back around mid-January with my annual birthday/2nd blogoversary giveaway for my followers. What will be included in the giveaway? Well, something you've seen featured in this post for one--hint, hint!

I truly love vintage postcards and the sentiment on this one is perfect for the approaching new year. 2011 is like a blank slate for us. As Edith Lovejoy Pierce said: "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day." I hope your new year is blessed with good health, much happiness, and everything that brings you smiles...
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

  4. Great finish Carol! The one time I took a piece in to be framed I ironed it, rolled it and put a loose elastic around it.

Have a fabulous, warm, sunny trip to Florida and have a Happy New Year!

  5. Way to go Carol. It is beautiful! I would find it hard to choose a favourite block, as they are all so lovely when you look at them individually.

I hope it's nice and warm and sunny for you in Florida.

    Happy new year!

  10. Huge congratulations to you on your HRH finish! Gorgeous!! Love your tree and ornies as well. You're going to have quite the collection continuing the ornies into 2011. Have a wonderful time in Florida! Hope it's warm for you there! Happy New Year!

  11. Congratulations on your lovely finish. With your framing you dont really need to press it as when the framers stretch it they stretch it enough so the creases come out (if they are really good at it). To transport such a big piece though you should be ok rolling it.
    Happy New Year!

  12. Kudos on such a great finish!!! That is a great accomplishment and I can't wait to see all of your new stitched goodies in the new year.

    Happy new year...

  13. YES, it's done. So beautiful. You will look upon it and smile each time. All the christmas pictures are so pretty. As for framing it, I press it and roll it in acid free tissue and wrap it around a bounty tube that is empty. it keeps it nice and neat. The framers know how to do it and will take care of it. I was so afraid when I dropped off the piece I had done for my daughter this year, but it came out great. I hope you have warm weather in Florida. Enjoy your time with your parents. Have a safe and blessed New Year my stitching friend.

  14. Congratulations, Carol! What a huge accomplishment and you made it before the year is out! When I take things to the framer's, I usually do a pressing then roll it up and put it in a bag. That's it.

I too have been thinking of stitching more from my stash next year, although I won't swear off buying new designs. I just can't but will try and be good! I will also destash a bit soon so that will help.

Have a wonderful time in sunny (yes!) Florida! Happy New Year, Carol!

  17. Congratulations Carol - your CaHRH is stunning! I don't think I could pick a favorite block. They all are!

Enjoy your time here in Florida. It's been unusually cold but it's warming up tomorrow. It should be over 60 for the next 10 days. I don't know about the sun but I can't imagine that it would be any worse than where you live.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide to stitch next!

  18. Congratulations Carol on one huge finish! It was well worth the work. It is absolutely wonderful.
I always iron my fabric myself and very gingerly carry it in to the framers. I handle it so carefully they are almost afraid to touch it LOL.
Have a wonderful trip to Florida and look forward to your newest start.
    Happy New Year!

  23. Just beautiful! There is nothing like that feeling of sitting back and admiring a project that you've dedicated so much time to.

I frame most things. I don't like glass and rarely use a mat. I like a little batting behind the picture, otherwise they'll need to use spacers. Ask to see what that will look like. I made that mistake once.... only once. Also, stretching a large piece takes skill. Use a framer who you KNOW has done needlework before. (A framer in a needlework shop would be perfect.) I press it first, if I feel like it. Otherwise, I roll it up and take it in a project bag. Good Luck!

    Safe travels,

    Pam

  30. Yay! Congratulations on your beautiful finish! I love the little changes you made here and there, esp. with the carolers block. It's stunning!

As far as framing, I press but you don't have to. Fact is, I shove it in an envelope and send it to Jill and she stretches the creases out. I frame with spacers and glass to protect the needlework from dust and I also get a lot of light in my apartment so uv glass is kind of necessary for me. Each person is a little different. Please take it to an experienced framer who knows how to handle needlework though.

Great gifts! Hope you enjoy your visit to FL! Happy New Year...so looking forward to ornie stitching! :)

  32. Oh Carol, congratulations!!!!! I am so thrilled that you have achieved your goal of stitching this huge project in 2010!! It is just stunning! Dear only knows when I'll be reporting Autumn as a finish - in several years probably!!

I do usually iron any piece I leave in with the framer even though it's going to be stretched.

Have a lovely time in Florida, enjoy a taste of warmer weather. Wishing you and yours health and happiness in 2011!

I love the entire piece but my favorites are the skating pond and Christmas tree farm.

You've received lovely gifts from your stitching pals.

I too, will be "stitching from my stash" this year. I have many things that I have forgotten about and more that I could ever finish in a lifetime. The temptation will still be lingering to "check out the new goodies" though :)

I wish you the Happiest of New Years. Enjoy your trip to Florida.
Maybe you can bring back a bit of the weather with you~~

  38. WooHoo! Congrats on such a wonderful finish!! I'm sure you're thrilled with the results despite all the tribulations. I think the Cardinal square is my favourite of the bunch.
When I take my finishes to the framer I press them and if they're large like yours I roll them up. I prefer no glass on my frames unless there are smokers in the house where it will reside.
I hope you have an enjoyable time in Florida and may you and yours have a blessed and prosperous New Year!

  39. Carol --
Congratulations on your GORGEOUS finish! It is absolutely stunning. I've had a lot of things professional framed and I do make sure my piece doesn't have any stray threads of snippets and that it is ironed. I use conservation glass when I have a heirloom type piece to frame. The cost is a little more but with something you want to last more than a lifetime it is certainly worth it.

Have a wonderful trip to Florida. I hope it's warm and you get some relaxation in.

I've enjoyed reading your blog this year and getting to know you and look forward to 2011:))))

  45. Woohoo! What a gorgeous finish! Excellent job on keeping up with it every month.

As for the framing, make sure you iron all the creases out. I-R-O-N. If it's a smallish piece I usually carry it in flat between two pieces of cardboard, but since this is bigger it's probably better to roll it up. And if you've got any stray threads on the back that might show through, be sure to snip them/tuck them out of sight. Oh, and just make sure you haven't accidentally missed a random stitch somewhere (what? who would ever do that!)
I go with glass but it's really your preference and depends on where it's going to be hung (high traffic vs low traffic, grubby paws may touch vs not, etc)
And take your time picking a frame, if you really don't "feel" the combo, don't go for it. Nothing like picking something, forking over a bundle and then realizing you hate it.
Whew! That was a ton of blathering ;)

    Have fun in Florida!

  47. Woohoo Carol, Congrats on the finish! I have really enjoyed watching your progress on this piece. I can't offer advice on the framing because my Dad does it for me....I asked once at Michaels and almost fainted at the price they told me (and that was with the discount too). With a piece this big and priceless I would shop around and pay that bit more to have it framed properly.

Happy New Year to you and your family, hope you have fun and warmth in Florida!

  49. Woo-hoo! Congratulations on your finish.

I usually wash and iron before stitching and then stitch on a frame. I don't need to iron again after finishing. I always roll mine in acid-free tissue paper both to store and when I take to the framers. When storing at home I'll put the roll into a cardboard tube as well, so that there aren't any creases. I trust my framer so much. I know my job of how to stitch, he knows his job of framing. As to glass, mount, frame, that's personal preference. Don't be rushed into it. There's many a time my framers asked if I would like a chair!

    Have a wonderful 2011.

  59. Oh Carol, what a beauty you have finished here. Congratulations! It must have brought you a sweet feeling of accomplishment having finished this exactly within a year.
I can't recommend any kind of framing because I have never had anything that big framed.
I just wanted to add how much I loved the collection of ornaments that you finished in 2010, and each of them finished in a different way. So beautiful. This year I'll try to stitch an ornament a month for the third time. I failed twice but this time I'm SALing with a small group of friends so I think I'll manage.

  63. WaHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I thought I heard something echoing off the ocean and the hills of Clare--now I know it was you! ;) Your CaHRH finish is fabulous!! Great job. I think you were right to change the name--I'd do the same, if it wasn't a 'real' repro. After all, you're the one who did the work! For framing, what I do is iron the piece from the back, with a towel between the iron and the needlework. Then, take it into the shop. What I tell the framers is that I want it framed fairly close to the edge of the stitching--you don't want a big space of fabric floating between the frame moulding and the stitching. I always get regular glass unless it's going in a place that gets a lot of sun, and I ask for spacers between the glass & the stitching. I don't go with mats. It's up to your own personal preference.

Wishing you and yours a blessed new year!

  64. Have a great time in SUNNY and WARM Florida with your son. :D And congratlations on your gorgeous finish. I suggest the non-glare (archival?) glass to protect the piece. It's all but invisible to viewers, but will protect it from UV rays, dust, etc. It's horribly expensive, but worth it. ;)

  68. Congratulations Carol, your Hawk Run Hollow is absolutely beautiful!!! I am sure it will look wonderful in the frame you will choose, good luck with the framing. I am always a bit worried when I take something to the framer, mainly because I have to leave my stitching there, but until now the result was always great.

This year I am also planning to stitch from my stash, even more, to finish up all the started projects before starting anything new. We will see how much I can keep this... :)
