It's been a while, hasn't it? I've missed you! Two and a half weeks away from home for my son's wedding in California and our 40th anniversary Hawaii trip--the longest I have ever been away. Eight plane rides + nearly 11,000 miles flown = one bad head cold. I hadn't had a cold in nearly two years, but, thankfully, this one reared its ugly head after our trip! And at least now that I'm retired, I can rest here at home, drink lots of water and eat my chicken noodle soup... Anyway, I've been asked by many of you if I could share some wedding photos so I'll do just that after I show you my latest finish...
I blame this one on the squirrels--the trio of gray squirrels romping around the lower left border reminded me so much of those in our yard this time of year that I just had to stitch this one! I'm sure you'll recognize it as a Prairie Schooler--it is from "Autumn Samplers" (Book No. 66) which has three gorgeous fall-themed beauties. I'd love to stitch the others some day, too.
Prairie Schooler "Autumn Sampler" finish |
This one is stitched on 40 ct. country mocha Newcastle linen using the suggested DMC threads.
Just love those squirrels! |
I have to admit that those leaves were starting to get to me after a while, however I just kept plugging away! But, I loved the saying and the fallish colors, too. Oh, how I wish Prairie Schooler designs were still creating new charts--they are so timeless!
Aren't the fall colors perfect? |
Being away for 2 1/2 weeks, I missed most of the really good autumn color here in Pennsylvania. When we left on October 18th, the leaves were still green--very unusual for that time of year. But, when we returned many had turned color and fallen, although there are still a fair number remaining. After the frigid weather that is moving in this weekend, though, I doubt many will hang on too long! Anyway, I hope to frame this one (famous last words!)...
Another Prairie Schooler checked off my "must-stitch" list! |
When I got back from my travels, I was thrilled to find two little gift packages waiting in my accumulated mail. My long-time blogging friend, Cindy, sent me two beautiful gifts to help me celebrate my retirement. Just look at this gorgeous needleminder and needlecase--and in blue, my favorite color! I love that pretty sunflower card, too... Thank you so much, Cindy--you have been a special stitching friend through all these years!
Retirement gifts sent from Cindy |
And Tawny (in New Jersey) sent me two cute charts to thank me for sending her a chart that she couldn't find. Thank you, Tawny--I look forward to stitching them!
Thank you gifts sent from Tawny |
In other stitching news, I did get a new Christmas ornament stitched while in Hawaii, but I'll wait until it's finished off to share it with you.
♥♥♥ So, the wedding ♥♥♥... It was such a beautiful day--in every way... I'm sure every parent of a bride or groom feels that way, but my husband and I were just beaming the entire day as we watched our oldest son and our now daughter-in-law start their life together...
The wedding was held at a lovely old mission style church in Oceanside, California on a day that couldn't have been nicer--sunshine and blue skies abounded! I loved the simple style of this church much more than the grand cathedrals I've seen in my travels. The ceremony was bilingual... since my new daughter-in-law is of Mexican American heritage, the priest spoke in both English and Spanish.
St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oceanside, CA |
I'll just share a few more photos...
The new couple made their way to the reception in this vintage auto. |
Relaxing at the reception |
Blue and orange flowers complemented the bridesmaids' royal blue dresses |
The groom's proud parents--we clean up pretty well (although it looks like a vine is growing out of my head!). It's hard to tell in this photo, but my dress was a beautiful dark amethyst color. |
The reception was held at Green Gables Wedding Estate in nearby San Marcos, CA. It had such great backdrops for photo taking with the old schoolhouse, chandeliers hanging from trees, a gazebo, and a turquoise vintage truck |
The dessert table included traditional cakes, cupcakes, and an assortment of Mexican candy! |
One of my favorite photos taken by a co-worker of the bride's |
People asked me if I cried--oh, I got a bit teary eyed, but I honestly didn't cry. Well, that day, anyway! The day before the wedding I saw the following post on Instagram and it just set me off... Tears and so many memories swelled up in me as I read these words that were originally written by Tabitha Studer on her blog way back in 2011 in a post called "25 Rules For Mothers of Sons." This is her Rule Number 25:
And my sweet new daughter-in-law understands this so well. The morning of the wedding she gave me a gift bag filled with a framed photo of herself and my son, some charms (one of which read "Thank you for raising the man of my dreams"), chocolates, a lovely blue and white handkerchief, and most meaningful of all--a beautifully handwritten note about her love for my oldest son and assuring me that I "wasn't losing a son, but gaining a daughter!" How blessed I feel to have this wonderful young woman in our family!
I am out of time today--my poor head is aching from this cold. I need to go through my Hawaii photos before I can share them with you... so until next time, my friends! Thank you all for taking the time to visit and maybe even taking the time to leave a comment... Each and every one means so very much to me! Bye for now...

Hi Carol,
Your new sampler looks gorgeous, I like the colors well, and the three squirrels are really funny.
Oh, two magical gifts, I'm very happy for you.
Since you have had a really nice experience with the wedding of your son, the pictures look quite magical. Beautiful flowers, a great setting for a wedding. I am very happy for you.
Best regards, Martina
Hi Carol, what a beautiful post!! Your stiching is lovely I like the colours and The Prairies always finishes to be gorgeous also if I believe you when you say all the leaves 🍁 🙄🙄
Nice the report of the wedding... I have a daughter (24) and a son (21) so that we have to wait for a wedding 😉 but the words you posted are so true and I’m happy for you you found such a lovely daughter!
🤗💓
Carol, like you I have a lot of Prairie Schooler patterns that I want to stitch. I have to say after 40 years of stitching, Prairie Schooler is my favorite designer to this day. The wedding looked just lovely and what a sweet gesture ...the gift bag from your new Daughter. Feel better soon...we always forget how miserable a cold can be until one decides to visit us. ( And by the way, you looked gorgeous in your wedding attire!)
What a lovely post. Your Prairie Schooler piece looks great and so great for this time of year.
The wedding photos are fantastic. Everything looked so perfect. Love the photo of your three hunky sons and also those cute little flower girls. You and Tim look like such a happy couple and your dress is gorgeous. I'm so glad everything worked out so well (except for that mean cold that I hope goes out the door quickly!).
What a sweet post..you can feel the "love"coming through the page!!! The wedding looked beautiful..congrats all around!!! I love the PS piece.. fall colors are my favorite; I agree they are timeless and will be missed!
Prairie schooler is classic. Love the fall colors. The wedding pictures are so pretty. I hope you feel better soon. All of those plane rides definitely gave you the head cold for sure.
Carol, what a blog entry, so full of joy! Love that PS piece, don’t believe I’ve ever seen it stitched up before, but it’s stunning! Your trip and your son’s wedding, what a great start to your retirement and memory for your anniversary! The pictures and stories were wonderful. I loved the words to the mother of a son. It’s obvious your sons grew up with lots of love and now you have a wonderful daughter to love as well. We love our daughter-in-law very much and feel so lucky to have her in our family. Congratulations, Carol! And hope that cold goes away fast! Harriet
Your Autumn sampler is the most gorgeous colours,I love the little squirrels too.
What fantastic wedding photos, you and your husband have three lovely sons and the bride looked beautiful, what a sweet girl.Your dress was very pretty too,Carol. You and your husband make handsome couple.
Rule 25 brought tears to my eyes.I think mothers of sons, and especially if one has sons and no daughters can relate fully to the sentiments of rule 25.
Looking forward to seeing your Hawaii photos :)
The wedding was lovely. Your dress was perfect. Best wishes to the couple. The stitching is gorgeous. I have never done a Prairie Schooler, but I hope to change that. I guess they became popular during the times of my life when teaching and parenting got the best of me and I laid down stitching. I have picked it back up and hate I missed any years doing it. It was and is my favorite hobby. ThosePS Santas are so cute!
I think flying is the culprit for a cold. Every time my daughter flies, she gets one.
What a beautiful post to read from you this morning! The photos from your son's wedding are wonderful. I wish the bride and groom many happy years to come. Carol, your PS Autumn Sampler is stunning; it is one of my favorites. I keep saying I will get the other 2 stitched.
I hope you are on the mend from your head cold. Rest up this weekend and keep drinking those fluids. Thinking of you!
PS I meant to say that I really like your new blog header picture. Details please?
Oh Carol, your new DIL sounds amazing. What a sweet gift to you! They are a beautiful couple and I wish them many blessings in the years ahead. Looks like they had a beautiful wedding. Feel better soon!
Oh my. Your post really, truly touched me Carol. I find myself crying here. I am so very happy for you. For you all. Congratulations. The pictures are lovely. The bride and groom are beautiful. So is your stitching. ;)
Beautiful stitching, and an even more beautiful post about your son and new daughter's wedding! I'm tearing up over here. Your entire family sounds wonderful. Congratulations to you all!
0h Carol I am tearing up also , thats twice today , the other tears were at a school play this morning.
Your daughter in law is beautiful , your sons look such lovely young men you must be so proud .
Happy Anniversary to you and your husband you look a beautiful couple.
Your stitching always looks so beautiful too , love this Autumn stitch .
Hoping your cold goes away soon .
Thanks for sharing those lovely photos hugs.
I also have quite a head cold today, Carol, do I hope I can manage a nice, coherent comment without forgetting important things.
Your PS is LOVELY, (of course you know I like it, right? :D ;) ) and I totally agree about a wish for more designs. They are my favorite bar-none! This is one, though, where I do "wonder" about getting through the leaves, so I smiled to hear your feedback on that! (Some others are those horizontal charts with tons of repeating jack-o-lanterns, leaves and a turkey, and...another autumn that escapes me. They are, of course, very handsome—but have an intimidatingly heavy-fill step-and-repeat design to them!)
The wedding looks like it was Just Wonderful, and I love the sweet gift and letter your new DIL prepared for you! You and DH looked great--stole the show! My favorites are the pic of all the brothers with the bride, and the nice candid shot the co-worker caught. I'll say bye for now; may be back later if I missed something! Oh, heal well and quickly, for both of us!
Carol, such a beautiful post - I'm teary eyed and making a mess of my eyeglasses. What a gem you have for a daughter in law!! I loved looking at all the photos. I really like those squirrels that you stitched - they look so real. Take care of that cold. ♥
Carol, what a beautiful blog post..lovely stitching and gorgeous wedding photos, what a lovely family you have, thank you for sharing I so enjoyed the mom & son rules touched my heart ❤️
Carol, thank you for sharing the wedding photos. What a lovely couple and on such a beautiful day too! And you and Tim didn't look too shabby neither! ;-) In the photo where your three boys are together, I had never realized how alike they look and you can tell they are brothers!
I am glad you didn't get sick till after you got home. It would've been awful flying.
I love that Prairie Schooler sampler. I think I will always love PS designs. I can *almost* feel myself stitching them! Lovely gifts from your friends too!
Take care!
A feast for the eyes-your Autumn Sampler is beautiful, your sons are so handsome with the oldest looking like you, the bride is so pretty, wow! The pictures are beautiful. I don't stitch enough PS and should because to me they're a comfort stitch, like wearing a beat up pair of slippers. Bummer that you picked up a cold but nice it came after all the festivities:) Good thing you can stay home and take it easy. I'm looking forward to the Hawaii pics!
An absolutely gorgeous wedding Carol. i would love to see more photos. Congrats on the great finish.
Linda
Your stitching is beautiful, as always. Looking forward to seeing your ornament! I've been to Mass at St. Mary's! My son and his family live in Oceanside and the first time they took me to the pier, I knew I needed to go inside that beautiful church! Congratulations to the happy couple!
I always look forward to your posts! And this one especially! The Autumn PS piece is really cute--it will look great framed! I have just the frame in my stash... :) And the wedding photos sure were great to see! Your sons and husband are all very handsome! You make a lovely family! And now, you have a beautiful daughter-in-love to add! The reception venue was gorgeous! So glad the weather cooperated for the wedding festivities! But sorry you are sick now. You will realize how nice retirement is now... no PTO worries for sicknesses! You can just take it easy... and keep stitching and blogging! Big Hugs!
Oh, this beautiful wedding made me a little teary-eyed! Sound like you've had a lovely month, well until the cold that is! Take care!
Hello Carol,
dein Herbst Sampler sieht wunderschön aus. So richtig leuchtende Herbstfarben.
Die Geschenke von deinen Freundinnen sind sehr schön.
Vielen Dank für das Zeigen einiger Hochzeitsbilder.
Schönes Wochenende und liebe Grüße, Manuela
So many lovely photos Carol, the dresses were all lovely including your own - such an rich lovely colour.
I hope you feel better very soon.
What a beautiful wedding!!! You have some fine looking sons!!
It looks like it was a beautiful day for a wedding! Congratulations to your family!
Beautiful stitching, as always :)
Carol, I hope you feel better soon, a cold can really get you feeling down and out but thankfully it was after the vacation and not during.
I love the PS Stitch as Autumn is my favorite season, don't feel too bad about missing the colors, if your area was anything like mine in NY it was a very disappointing year for color.
What a great looking family! Your oldest looks so much like your husband and your son makes such a handsome groom. The bride is gorgeous and I love her dress, I love the classic look and not the "sexy" wedding dresses that show so much these days. She is a beautiful young lady inside and out and you must be overjoyed to have a daughter in the family.
Great photo of the grooms parents! Your dress is gorgeous!
Looking forward to the Hawaii photos on your next post! Have a great weekend. Mary
I wish young couple long years of love and compassion!
Beautiful sons! They look like father :-)
Hi Carol, Congrats for the recent wedding and your anniversary. The wedding photos are beautiful. So special.

What a beautiful wedding. Truly bringing two families and cultures together as one. I would have cried - for sure! I have stitched that PS design. I have it framed and display it every September.
Hi Carol! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful wedding with us. Your daughter-in-law sounds like a real keeper:) And that post about mothers of boys - I have 3 sons also and it was good to read and remember that! Hope you get over your cold and can begin to settle into your new "retired" routine.
Lovely stitching finish , Carol! The pictures are wonderful. So nice that your daughter-in-law is so understanding and you both will have a great bonding:) Your photo looks pretty ! All your three sons resemble each other and look more like their Dad.
Oh my goodness Carol!!!! Thank you so much for sharing all of this wonderful excitement. I have been stalking your blog for about a week now wondering when you were going to post, LOL. The wedding looks absolutely amazing and what a beautiful family you have. I hope you feel better soon. Blessings to you my dear.
Hi Carol, what a beautiful family you have! Congrats on gaining a new daughter. Thank you for sharing those lovely photos -- what a special day!
Such handsome sons you have! That’s a wonderful picture of the bride and groom and his two brothers! Looks like the wedding was beautiful and just a perfect day – so glad for you that all went well.
Your new PS finish is looks wonderful. I can completely relate about the squirrels, and those three appear to be having lots of fun. The “come little leaves…” PS is on my must-stitch list – have you done that one? Their fall designs are all so nice.
Beautiful wedding pictures. Looking forward to pics of Hawaii.
Your PS finish is so fall-ish. Love it.
Beautiful wedding photos! What a wonderful thing for your new daughter inlaw to have given you as a gift! As a mother of 3 sons, I can appreciate the sentiment. Beautiful stitching on that Prairie Schooler piece. Such lovely colors!
Autumn Sampler turned out nice.
Beautiful wedding pics, and what a great idea to have the service and speech in 2 languages.
Your son and DIL make an attractive couple.
I hope you feel better soon, take care.
Marilyn
What a wonderful blog post, Carol. Your Autumn Sampler is beautiful. Makes up for the fall foliage that you missed.
Carol this was such a touching post. I just knew the wedding would turn out perfect and it did. Your son and his beautiful new wife look so happy. They were certainly made for each other. What your new daughter did for you was so sweet and special. Everything about the wedding looked absolutely perfect. I love the setting for the wedding and the reception. What a wonderful idea that it was said in the two languages and how special that your one son could speak the Spanish language. Congrats to all.
Your PS Sampler is perfect. It is such a pretty design. And what a lovely gift from Cindy. Now get better quickly. RJ@stitchingfriendsforever
Hello Carol, I can understand the feelings as you felt on your son's wedding day. We too have two wonderful daughter-in-laws. I've always dreaded having DILs who disliked their Mother-in-Law and I feel blessed that my boys have chosen beautiful “daughters” for me. Your son has selected a beautiful young woman who seeks to make you happy. For the first time in your life you have a Daughter! Enjoy the new experiences you will share with her.
You feel overwhelming love for that little boy and now look at the man he has become and the future he has chosen. As that beautiful saying says, he will always need your advice, understanding and love.
As usual you have chosen beautiful designs. I too am sorry that PS is no longer producing their wonderful designs. I know you are a hoarder of designs, and the fact that you are stitching from PS Book 66, suggests that you have quite few PS designs available for you to stitch in the future.
Enjoy your newfound freedom.
Carolyn
What abeautiful post again. Your autumn sampler is beautiful. I love the TPS designs.
Thanks for sharing the pictures of that special day with us. Your son and his new wife make an attractive couple. And you and your husband too!!!
Wait for the pics from Hawaii.
Hugs, Gabi
Love those three squirrels! What a sweet gift from your daughter-in-law. (After having lived in L.A. for 14 years, I can say that getting any other kind of weather for the wedding would have been remarkable!)
First off, love your stitching -- I agree about Prairie Schooler. Second -- OK, I didn't need that about mothers and sons. lol! Crying, of course! The wedding looks like it was wonderful! So special and beautiful! And how wonderful that your middle and youngest did their speeches in both languages like that (well, one in one and one in the other). Congratulations to the happy couple, and to the parents too.
Whoops! Forgot to say -- feel better!
Love the colors in your Prairie Schooler piece! And I may be one of the few people who love squirrels and actually am happy when they come for a visit. The wedding pictures are just beautiful! You have a lovely new daughter-in-law, Carol, and three handsome sons! What a beautiful dress you wore for the day! Thank you for sharing the mother, son piece - the words brought some tears to my eyes, as well. : ) I'm so sorry to hear you have been sick - rest and feel better!
Carol: What a beautiful Couple they make, she is lovely he is so handsome, I bet you are happy to have a new daughter.
Love the Prairie Schooler Design, is so pretty.
Wonderful gifts you have received, I am looking forward to seeing your vacation photos.
Blessings
Catherine
Your Autumn PS piece perfectly captures the season!
Loved seeing the wedding photos and the rare photo of you and your husband! It sounds like you have a great daughter in law - it's not always an easy relationship so you're truly blessed!
Carol, What a BEAUTIFUL wedding! Your dress is gorgeous! I love the color! and you look like you have the same figure as when you were the bride! I love the white and blue cake -so unique and artistic Everyone looks so happy. What a joyful day. Your new daughter in law is very lucky to have joined your lovely family. Oh, and your stitching is perfection as always 😊
That Autumn sampler is lovely . It has wonderful colors. Now to the best part! I loved seeing the wedding photos. If I had to pick a favorite, it might be the one of your son with the little girls!! It looked like one of the royal weeding pictures with the children. You did so well with your new DIL. I hope she brings much joy to your family. You and your DH do clean up very well. I hope this finds you feeling much better. Thanks so much for sharing the beautiful pictures of the wedding!
What a lovely post, Carol. I am new to your blog, and I am enjoying it so much that I have gone back to the beginning and am reading it in order as I have time. Your cross stitching is beautiful, and I agree - such a relaxing, fun way to spend time. - Meg D.
Your Autumn stitching is very pretty!
A beautiful and so happy couple! Loved seeing the photos.
Feel better soon!
Oh what a wonderful post, my dear friend. I already read it the second time now. The first time I was so touched that I did not find the words to comment. Even some tears were running when I read the text of mother & son.
I am so happy to read, that you had a wonderful wedding. Your new dauthter is real beauty and the newly wed look so happy on the pictures. Thank you for sharing.
Oh, and of course I love your Autumn finish. Squirrels seem to be the most joyful animals for me. We had many in our old garden, but here we hardly ever have seen any. I think the reason is Ginger. She is hunting everything that runs through our garden (bad girl).
Have a wonderful new week, dear friend!
Hugs
Hilda
Carol, your stitching is gorgeous as always. You find the nicest projects! Oh my, what a beautiful wedding! I’d have cried my eyes out, seeing their happiness. Too bad about your cold but isn’t it nice to be home and pampering yourself?
Sure a lot of people talking about having cold and other ickiness. Sorry it found you. Glad it waited till after you were home though. I love your seasonal finish. The squirrels are too funny. Beautiful fall colors throughout the design. Great gifts from stitching friends. Stitching friends are the best. The wedding photos are beautiful. I love the Instagram thing you posted. Since I have a son I sure loved reading that. Your new daughter in law sounds fantastic. Unfortunately my in laws are very much the opposite and we can't be around on another at all. It saddens me but it's beyond my control. Hop you fell better soon.
the autumn sampler is very beautiful, love the colors. The wedding pictures are so nice to see !
Oh my, Carol, what a wonderful new finish you have. I have always loved this Prairie Schooler chart, all the details and motifs are just adorable. And it was certainly a fun stitch with all the great autumn colours. Well, maybe one day I will get to stitch this one as well. I also love the little pillow in your header, the design looks so great on the blue fabric.
Thanks for showing us all the wedding pictures, they are so delightful.I particularly love the one with your sons and the bride. And the one with your and your husband. You seem to have a wonderful daughter-in-law from what you write about her. Such a thoughtful gift she gave you for the wedding, so very special.
I hope that you are already on the mend and that your head cold will be away soon. You are right, Carol, when you are retired and you get a cold you just can do what is best for you to get rid of it :)
Congratulations to the happy couple and both families! It looks like a beautiful day, Thank you for sharing your photos. I love the one of your sons with the bride, they look like lovely young men.
Your PS Autumn design is really pretty, I have not stitched many of their designs as they can be a little prim for my tastes but this one is lovely.
Hope you feel better soon!
Congratulations to the very happy couple! What beautiful photos you posted. I am so happy for you and your family!
Loved that Prairie Schooler, it's been on my list to stitch for ages. Hope that your cold is better now and I can't wait to see what you've recently stitched!
Give Western PA and Pittsburgh a big hug for me, oh how I miss "home"
What a beautiful wedding and I especially liked the picture of your handsome sons with your new daughter in law! I'm happy you had a wonderful trip and are safe at home to nurse your cold (that everyone seems to have gotten lately!).
I've got back into stitching lately partly because of your blog and I am unearthing charts that have been on my to-do list forever. I'm not a fast stitcher so it will take me the rest of my life to get through them - if I ever do!!
Keep the inspiration coming...
Your stitching is great, what a fun fall design! It looks like the wedding went off well, how lucky you are to have such a nice new daughter in the family and love the picture of your sons together. Great dress and neat venue, glad you had so much fun! Hope the cold has completed its run by now!
Carol, sei bellissima e anche la tua famiglia è bellissima! Auguri agli sposi!
The wedding looked wonderful and you have a beautiful daughter-in-law.
Your Autumn piece is lovely. Looking forward to seeing your next Christmas ornament. I think I have admitted defeat for this year!
Have a good weekend.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post. It looks like you have gained a sweet, thoughtful daughter to your family and I wish them many happy years together. Thank you for sharing all of the beautiful photos, it looks like it was an amazing day.
Wonderful post Carol, loved seeing the wedding photos and the happy bride and groom. Your new DIL sounds very understanding and thoughtful. I hope they will both be very happy in the future. Your new sampler is very pretty, full of the warm autumn colours.
